Let me clarify part of what I posted.. There are at least two very active SBA support threads. Besides this thread there is also this thread:

Several (including this one) contain posts which appear to "resolve" this. (an example can be found here: http://www.zen-cart.com/forum/showpo...&postcount=642)

However it should be noted that these solutions only add this functionality for products in which you are creating SINGLE attribute product variants. (ie: Small t-shirt)

If you have product variants which include MORE THAN ONE attribute (ie: Small, blue t-shirt) these "fixes" don't appear to help with display of out of stock product variants which include more than one attribute.
