Is it possible to set an expiration date for the cache?

I get the following in Google's Page Speed Addon for Firebug:

The following cacheable resources have a short freshness lifetime. Specify an expiration at least one week in the future for the following resources:

Any direction would be really appreciated - I understand it might be a no-goer without some serious coding.
