Old mods never list the existence of a newer version. It's always a good idea to look for a newer version when upgrading. I do an advanced search at the beginning of each month with the Date From set to the preceding month. For example, at the beginning of June, I set the Date From at 05/01/2011 and clicked search. That resulted in ten modules that were added or updated in the month of May.

On the IH2 front, go to Admin >> Tools >> Image Handler to remove it. This is also stated in the readme for IH3 under installation. Installation instructions often include upgrade instructions for those with previous versions.
