"Insufficient Stock" notice doesn't appear in shopping cart

Hi,

While products with attributes show the "Insufficient Stock" notice in the cart when you try ordering more than we have, products that don't have any attributes don't show the notice. I do not want to display available quantities on product pages, but at the same time, I do want to allow checkout if order is larger than stock, just need the insufficient stock notice to appear. What do I need to do?
