One other note about advantages and disadvantages. Because the links are stored in the database, if you have a lot of products, it can lead to a site slowdown. I have seen this once with a customer. Normal sites I wouldn't think it would be noticeable.
Just throwing this out there. Is there a way to bulk generate uri's? The uri is generated when product is manually added or updated. Is there a way to automate this?
There is a commercial version of the module which does this.. You will need to contact the vendor for more details than that as any in depth discussions of commercial modules is forbidden on this forum..
Otherwise I do know that others have created spreadsheets and scripts to do the initial product and category loads.. If you are comfortable with SQL, you could do this..

Are there any updates forthcoming for ZC1.5.4?

As DrByte indicated you will have to ask JSWeb. JSWeb has made it clear that the free version of this module is not something they will be actively supporting.
It would appear that this includes notices about upgrades, bugfixes, etc.. Given that they did submit an update when v1.5.3 was released, apparently they will submit updates as needed. Perhaps they will submit a v1.5.4 upgrade as well.
Again since JSWeb does not actively participate on this support thread, you will have to ask them directly what the plan is..

and I'm thinking it does not work correctly on 1.5.4. I'm definitely having problems on one website with the product list page not adding to cart.
I am severely disappointed that JSWeb had decided Conor's mods are a great way to just generate income. I know he would be upset to know what they have done with all of this.
Sorry, fuller report - no, it does seem to work on 1.5.4. None of the core files on the catalog side have changed from version 1.5.3 to 1.5.4. There are changes on the admin side but it may be that they are simply the addition of the new zen_record_admin_activity function. I will not edit the files and upload a new version. I don't want to be responsible for this train wreck. But if you use the old files, at a minimum part of the new PCI compliance code will be eliminated. This is not recommended by anyone - least of all me.
If you do not use the modified core files from admin, you will not to be able to create the urls in the database for new products, but the existing rewrites will continue to work. My advice is to use the catalog side files so that you won't lose the existing links and SEO for the moment, but to NOT CONTINUE TO CREATE ANYMORE. Continuing on this path probably guarantees that at some point your SEO will be impacted even more than necessary. Plan for a future without this mod.
The realization that this mod may be dead in the next version has prompted me to start looking at how to extricate my clients from this mod. Since it allows the site owner to edit the urls directly, it has been a great SEO tool for some. That very ability can make the change to a new SEO writer (and I would suggest Ultimate SEO as the best alternative) incredibly challenging.
One client specifically has over a 1000 products. I don't know if he has actually edited any of those urls and there's really no way to find that out. I'm looking at two options:
1. a new htaccess rule that will convert the old urls to the new ones. (not my expertise)
2. a way to collect all the old urls and rewrite all of them individually making that one of the largest htaccess files ever!
Just ow!
The reason why I'm posting is folks need to be warned. Do not be complacent and think you can just deal with this change when it happens to you. Start making plans now. The free ride with this is at an end.
Sigh, Conor, I miss you personally and professionally.
**nods in agreement**
You are speaking plainly and publicly, let me support YOU by doing the same.. You have said what I think MANY of us have been thinking and DEFINITELY saying privately.. I said this in a round about way in some of my posts (and was accused of being "disparaging"), because ACTIONS (or lack thereof) have indicated that all of Conor's free modules were not on the active maintainer's radar.. So THANK YOU for putting it out there..
This is so much truer than you know my friend..
lat9 has a module that may help bridge the gap. Read more here: http://www.zen-cart.com/showthread.p...ile-overwrites. In this post I ask for clarification about how the script she wrote works and it is NOW available in the free downloads.. I do believe that this module will bridge the gap between the currently available version of this module and Zen Cart v1.5.4.
I too am looking to convert the clients stilll using this mod. Ultimate SEO is my choice as a replacement since the active maintainer is as talented as Conor and he SUPPORTS his modules the same way Conor did..
I will have to look for it, and maybe mc12345678 will chime in, but there is a tutorial for how to generate an .httaccess file with the correct 301 redirects for those converting from this module to Ultimate SEO.. Personally it would be nice to have some kind of "conversion" module that would read the Ceon URI table and does this automagically.. but I digress, the tutorial looks like it will do the trick..
**nods in agreement**
Ditto!!!
