referral coupon question

The more I read about coupons, the more confused I get.
Can a coupon that is issued to someone who signs up to my email
list be used as a discount coupon on their first purchase only,
then be used as a referral coupon after that. Or do I need to
use 2 different coupon codes.

What exactly do you mean by "referral coupon after that"?
Do you mean the coupon actually has zero value, no impact, no effect, but is just a mental trick to make the customer think they're getting some sort of benefit?

Say you sign up on my email list.
I send you a coupon code for $10 off on your first order. That's the value of the coupon.
The coupon is good for $10 off just once.
Can it then also be used as a referral tracking coupon that you give to a friend.
When your friend signs up to the mailing list he will get a different coupon good for $10
but I will know he was referred by you. I would then arrange some sort of compensation to you
for the referral.

Oh, so you want the coupon to be an "Affiliate Tracking System"?

Can you tell me how the Customer Referral 1st Discount Coupon, as found in Options section of the Customers information, works.

It was designed only to track who referred the customer to your store.
You could use it for paying "commissions" by using the Customers Referral report.
But it's not an automated commissions-calculation system.

This is the verbiage from the Customer Details section.
I don't understand what the choices are giving me. Can someone explain what happens with choice 1 and 2.
What exactly happens with each choice.

0= Off
1= 1st Discount Coupon Code used
2= Customer can add during create account or edit if blank

NOTE: Once the Customers Referral Code has been set it can only be changed in the Admin Customer

The settings mean:
Customers Referral Code is created from
0= Off - No Customer's referral code is saved
1= 1st Discount Coupon Code used - this means that the Discount coupon code used will be automatically added as the referral code
2= Customer can add during create account or edit if blank - this means the customer is asked for a referral code, or edit later if it is left blank

Once a referral code is added to a customer's account, then it is only available to the Admin to change it in the Customers in the Admin ...

OK. Asking as simple as I can.
If I choose 1, and give that code to a new customer with a value of $10.
The customer uses it. Does it then turn into a referral coupon she/he can
give to other people for tracking purpose, and does it still have a value.

If you make a Discount Coupon called Fred10 and hand it to Harry ... then Harry gives it to Bob and Bob gives it to Ted and everyone uses it then that would be their referral code if they have never had a previous referral code (such as a new account or if it were blank, depending on the setting you are using) ...

Another method to track this Discount Coupon would be to either click on Report in your Zen Cart Admin for Gift Certificate/Coupons ... Coupon Admin ... and clicking on REPORT which will list all uses of the Discount Coupon ...

You could then, update the information on this REPORT so that you can obtain any other details that you are needing ...
