Both the Shipper number and password were simply alphanumeric. No special characters.Just for my edification, did either the Shipper Number or UPS password contain 'special' characters, e.g. <>"&?

I've just submitted v1.7.3 of the UPS/XML shipping module to the Zen Cart moderators for review and will post back here when it's available for download.
This release contains changes associated with the following GitHub issues:
#8: Don't return rates if an error is detected.
#11: Correct various undefined constants PHP warnings.
#12: Restructure logging.
#13: Drop support for Zen Cart versions prior to 1.5.3.
Now available for download: https://www.zen-cart.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=126
I just installed it on a cart but it's returning this: An unknown error occurred with the ups shipping calculations.
I've used this before with no issues so not sure what's going on.
Delia, which version of UPSXML and Zen Cart?
Edit: That message is issued when no quotes (and no errors) are returned by UPS. You could enable the shipping-method's debug to see the request/response information.

your most recent upload (1.7.3) and 1.5.5f
Sorry, it's 1.5.6a. A new client and didn't realize. on php 5.6.27
Shouldn't make a difference. That upsxml log-file will tell the story.
Everything looks correct for English/American etc in the shipping method and in the cart. Assuming they set up their account properly at UPS?
