it does NOT create a partial blank page.

Main page was set to open with a non-existing category. Changed it back to Top and it worked fine.

    That was the problem.

No need for the change but THANX swguy for getting my mind in the right area.

Like I said, either something really weird or really stupid.

Nice catch! I use that feature so infrequently I never would have thought of that.

Yep, when I added your change in the header and saw the cat not found notice (post 22), you could see the light slowly go on above my head.

What would cause a cat not to be found, what would call for the cat, and what would call for the cat that was NOT in a file.

An open with listing in the DB.

The customer had set that originally while there were just a couple of cats and they were working on others. Didn't change after deleting the temp cat.

So when deleting a category should there be a check to see if that categories id is set in "Main Page - Opens with Category" ?

I'm not positive it's worth doing.

I’m convinced that there needs to be something but where? Look at how many great minds (myself excluded) were stumped.

Admin settings are forgotten seconds after going live, display logs are generally ignored but is it enough of a problem to add a db query for every delete?

Since categories are seldom deleted and a category with products already brings up a notification, my vote is for a warning at category inactivation/deletion.
