newsletter and send mail problem - wants to download index.php

I have recently had issues with my host, now seem to be fixed.
I also upgraded to 1.3.7.

Now when I click on the button to either send an email or newsletter in admin, my browseer goes to open or download the php file newsletter.php for example.

what could be causing this?

and because it is the week of issues for me when a new customer is created, same thing, browser wants to open the associated php file. The new customer (me testing it) doesn't get an email, but they show up in admin.

Cart works fine all the way up to confirm order, when it wants to open or save the index.php file

you click confirm order and nothing happens, page says done, but order does confrim, think is customer won't know because it doesn't say that order has been placed etc

When the browser wants to download the index.php or other .php file after a period of delay, it's because the script is taking so long to execute that the browser doesn't know what to do with it.

This often is the case when you have poor database performance or experience some other timeout.

It suggests poor server performance on your host.

Have you tested to be sure other email activities are working properly?

could it be related to upgrading with fantastico (which i didn't know I should use at the time)?
what can be done to fix this? hassle my host?

issue seems to be related to only things connected with emails - such as confriming orders and using contact page in shop, and sending emails and newsletters in admin

It is unlikely that it is a problem with your server setup, as if it were, no php scripts would run.
Possibly file ownership or permissions on some files, or file naming? If the server can't execute the file it might simply download it.

I'm wa thinking maybe my config files at 444 could be it, but I don't know?
I'm going to try to upgrade again and build a new database on a copied version of my store and see if that helps

Just a thought, if you edit a file with Windows Notepad and similar, it loves to add a '.txt' extension when you save. Windows also actively hides this extension, so quite difficult to spot, and nasty to remove

I'm hoping building a new database will magically fix the problem
