Soooo unprofessional, how on earth would they ever read that out to a customer. They had better get some keywords in those URLs ASAP or they will be out of business.

    Christian.
We can't really equate Amazon.com and Best Buy with the types of do-it-your-selfer's websites that we see here at Zen Cart forums, now can we? Does Amazon.com need any help getting business? Does Jane Doe's cloth diaper site need every advantage it can get? I'm not here to argue the point of whether seo urls make a big difference, to me, that doesn't really matter, someone has supplied a mod to do it, and people that like the idea help support the thread. I'm curious why the anti-seo url side frequents the thread, except to keep reminding people of a stance that has been made perfectly clear? I whole-heartedly agree that the newest version of this mod is rife with issues, but I still support the right for people to want it without ridicule.

I'll probably regret jumping into this, but here goes. If I were Ajeh, I would have taken umbrage at the suggestion that Zen-Cart's unmodified URLs "look like crap" and are "unprofessional." I utilize search-engine friendly URLs whenever I can, but I don't think they are necessary for every commercial web site.

Ajeh's and CJ's tongue-in-cheek notations poignantly remind me that unmodified URLs are still in play on the Web's most productive e-commerce sites. And despite my personal preference to get a leg up on my clients' competition through search-engine friendly URLs, I don't feel the least bit ridiculed by such comments.

Hats-off to the Zen developers who continue their excellent work on ZC, and to the many users whose good-humored questions, ideas, feature requests, bug reports, etc. continue to further the evolution of the world's greatest open source e-commerce application.

    You guys all rock!

I've been modifying and testing my 1st Zencart store for the past couple of months. I checked out this thread 2 months ago and was not sure whether I would install it, today I still cannot make up my mind.

When I buy things online, I don't really look at the urls, nor do I care. I just want to get the checkout process over and done with. I've never looked at a gibberish url and thought "Oh, that looks so unprofessional". (usually it's the site design that disgusts me)

Having said that, given a choice I do strongly prefer to read a semantic url than a meaningless one. And I realise keyword urls are supposed to help rankings. I said "supposed to", because I'm not sure if it's actually been confirmed by search engine officials. But a lot of the SEO experts' theories do make sense, so I'm willing to do it, even though I have not seen hard data proof that it does help.

However, Ajeh and Kim's cautious view towards this mod makes me think twice about installing this mod (OK not twice, but many times!). It seems their caution relates to the mod's impact on core stability but I'm not a php coder so I don't really know. Anyway, if Zen Cart team is conerned about it, I'd better not use this rather technical mod. I thought I had made my decision.

Then 3 pages back I saw DrByte referred a beta tester to this mod. What does this mean? The searching restarted!

I'm not saying the Zen Cart team should be burdened with the responsbility of making a view about this mod. It is the individual store owner's responsibility to work out what to do. I'm just describing my decison making process. Every store owner has different techincal expertise, different needs, so the best decision would have to be different for everyone.

I read that dreamscape has not been well, I wish him a speedy recovery. I'd also like to thank the Zen Cart team for providing a great shopping cart and persevering with it.

I suppose the best thing to do would be to get the answer from the horses mouth, so to speak. The bolding is mine!

There are good arguments for meaningful URLs.
They're not responsible for a major boost of rankings, but keywords in
URLs can help sometimes. More important: they're useful for human
visitors, they get bookmarked more often, in URL drops their keywords
count as anchor text to some degree, and they make your server stats readable.

Having said that, however, the extra boost is NOT significant, but under some
    circumstances, can make a difference.
OK, so they're not responsible for a major boost in rakings, but the thing I'd forgotten was the stats!

    Is anyone else encountering this?

SEO on works fine, but cannot enable SSL pages. It'll complete the transactions through non-SSL.

It works, but it's kind of weird. Anyways, I enabled SSL for the entire site; it's a little hobby site with little load, so it's pretty good.

I haven't seen any errors or anything unusual, so it's pretty much good to go for me.

Give it a kick, I did and it's pretty good.

^-- what host do you go with? I am trying to determine if it is my host as I have been unable to get a stock v1.3.7 or a templated (hard coded) v1.3.6 templated to work.

Ahh. I want to do some linkbuilding ect but the site will just get trased in google ect with the current product url's

or can someone tell me a host you know the URL's work on? so I can get a stock install working.

I'm pretty sure it'll work on all Linux/PHP/Apache hosts. All you really need is Apache mod_rewrite, which I don't see why they wouldn't install.

You can go with any of the Zen recommended hosts.

The weirdness I encountered (I really would consider this as non-functional, but I kind of just accepted it, since I didn't see any error or security concerns):

    • Zenid will follow until I click on the links generated by crumbs. This doesn't bother me too much, because I just want to be able to publish functional links with clarity.
    • It will not switch to https, so I put the entire site on https.

Again, I haven't seen any error.

PHP is not my cup of tea, so I don't feel like to look into the codes or move too many things around. All I want to do is to have a simple and secure cart for my low traffic hobby site.

I think Zen developers have their reasons for everything so I'll just use it and be happy.
