Artist Sidebox

Greetings,

I am using Zen 1.3.7 and have scoured the posts for info on how to add an Artist sidebox. I have not been able to find a solution that will perform the same as the record company select function.

I am not a programmer but I am a pc consultant and can do enough to be dangerous to myself so I tend to be cautious. So I have a dup. site for testing.

So far I have copied from record_companies and created/modified:

includes\modules\sideboxes\artists.php
includes\index_filters\artist_filter.php
includes\templates\template_default\sideboxes\tpl_artists_select.php
includes\language\chrome(my custom template)\english.php

Admin:
\record_artists.php
\includes\language\english\record_artists.php

I have added a row in myPHP 'get_terms_to filter:
artists_id, table_record_artists, artists_name

My result is a sidebox labelled 'Artist' with a dropdown box. However in the dropdown box I only get a list of '..' which when I select one of them (..) I get a list of an artists products. And when I do a 'view source' in a browser I only see a list of '..' by the side of a list of artist_ids. So the only apparent item I seem to be missing is the population of the list with the 'artist_name'.

I feel that an Artist box would be a major help for my customers in their search for music.
I don't know if this is tacky, but I am desparate, I will make a donation of $250 if you guys can help me finish this project that others seem to want also.

I fixed the '..' in the dropdown box with the help of a friend... We removed the 0, Max_Display_Record_Artist_Name_Len and replaced it with a value '20' in record_artists.php and now all the artist names show in the dropdown box...

I am certainly interested. I do not have nearly the selection you do, but would like to have a separate box for Artists. Do you have a location where the files are available?

I will try and upload the files as a zip in the contributions area over the weekend....

I have been very pleased with the results of having an artist box.. There is still some tweaking to do.. Like having some artist show in the box just like the others.

I tried to build one myself, the box shows up, the artists are listed, all seems to be fine, until I select one artist - results in a blank page...

Did I miss something important?

How did you rewrote the selects in index filter? I think, my problem lies there, but I'm obvious to blind to see...

Maybe you have some useful hints for me, until you finished your contrib?

I was exactly studying to do something like this, but I could not go further.
I even wanted to ad manufacturer to music product to increase its searchability in advanced search, but I was not successful.

Ive got it to work up to the point where I just get a list of ".." I tried changing the MAX_DISPLAY_ARTISTS_NAME_LEN to 20 as mentioned above but nothing changed.
If I nail it down I will definetly post my files.

I am having trouble getting this to work. I'm not sure if it's because I'm still on 1.3.7 or because I am supposed to change something in the SQL file, but I haven't gotten past trying to run that SQL patch.
