I tried that and it made no difference

Try this and see if it makes a difference:

open includes/templates/desert_noon/css/stylesheet

find the following declaration and delete the highlighted portion.

a:hover, #navEZPagesTOC ul li a:hover {
color: #854401;
background: #E7D9BC;
font-weight: bold;
}
