Thanks, I installed Notepad++ on win 64 - it works - symbols are gone. I had similar problems as I used Visual Studio.
Merely saving the file isn't enough. If you're getting BOM characters, then you need to save the file with the right encoding, namely: UTF8-without-BOM ... however your editor allows you to do that.

For future readers, what I did in Crimson was use the Reload As... option, then saved again.
