I'm going to play devil's advocate here:
So why would you expect a distributor to drop ship to a consumer? That's not their function in the supply chain. There is a difference in being a distributor and a fulfillment center.
There are fulfillment centers set up in various consumer segments to drop ship (lingerie comes to mind). In my opinion, Amazon is nothing more than a giant fulfillment center.
And every distributor/manufacturer/importer no matter what market segment has minimum orders. That prevents me from being an electronics site and buying that one flat screen for personal use at wholesale. It's irritating, but it's for your protection.
When we 'go to market', the first questions we ask prospective suppliers are:
- what is your opening order?
- what is your re-order?
- where is the product shopped from?
- is there a freight cap?
And you will find there are always incentives for larger purchases from your suppliers (examples):
- spend $XXX and get free freight
- spend $XXX more and get christmas dating
- spend $xxx more and X% off and all of the above.
I would expect that you would give me a discount if I said I wanted 10-40" flat screens too.
That all said, I certainly commiserate with you on being frustrated by all this. Sometimes supplier's/wholesalers policies don't make much sense. I've been there and been frustrated too. You seem dedicated so I'm sure you'll figure out how to make this work. Good luck.
