Have to see your page with smiley's
To my knowledge, the stock distribution does not include any amiley images

Are you using the "Bookshelf" template? We do need to see it to diagnose the problem.

BetterCategories ez-page sidebox, links all prefixed with smileys in Firefox.

Somehow this image appears to be a smiley instead of whatever it is supposed to look like. What is it supposed to be? Did it come with the template, or the BetterCategories mod?

the template, which does also have a bettercategories folder as well

Just replace the image file
includes/templates/bookshelf/images/bc_ezpages.gif
with a file of the same name containing your preferred marker.
You can probably disable the image in the BetterCategories controls, but I don't know about those - ask in the BC support thread.
