Is this something we can do with Zen Cart?

Hello,

We have a shopping cart with trophies that need to be engraved with text and sometimes a logo\image file. Here's what we're looking for:

Let's use for example a trophy that will have 4 lines of engraved text. When a client goes to the trophy page and changes the quantity from 0 to 1, he should have 4 text fields where he can input the text that needs to be engraved on the trophy, and one upload field where he can add a logo\graphic file that needs to be engraved on the trophy. If he changes the quantity from 0 to 2, he should now have 8 text fields (4 for each of the 2 trophies), and 1 upload field where he can upload the logo\graphic file.

Also, we need tier prices for grouped products.

Is this something we can do with Zen Cart?

Thank you very much!

Re: Is this something we can do with Zen Cart?

Each of those two trophies is a separate product variant, since they are not identical. The product info page will have four text input fields and one upload field, and a quantity box which normally defaults to 1.
Your customer would enter the information for the first trophy and add that one to their cart, then repeat for any others. Consider: what if they wanted three trophies? Would you want 12 text fields on one page?
What if they wanted two identically engraved trophies (you never know...)? Would you have them enter the same info twice?

There are quantity discount schemes available, and you can select to group multiple instances of a product with different attributes, or not. Quantity discounts for groups of different products are not a standard feature, though.

Re: Is this something we can do with Zen Cart?

In terms of being able to send text and/or graphic material with the order... Yes, Zencart can do this.

However, you are looking for a feature that is sometimes called "conditional attributes" - where the value inserted in one field influences the display (or content) of other fields.

Right now, ZC cannot do the latter, but we are all hoping that the next release (1.4) will have this capability.

There are various modules available that cope with group pricing, and there are a number of people who could assist with custom code if necessary.

Thank you very much for the answers. We'll definitively have a further look at Zen-Cart. Hopefully we'll manage to make it work the way we need it to!

Glenn got in fractionally ahead of me! (Makes my post look irrelevant), but I have to agree with him.

Sometimes, our attempts to "over-automate" a process fails to take into account the peculiarities of human behaviour. Glenn points these out.

I believe ZC will offer you a very good solution for your product type - even with its (perceived) limitations. Best advice is to install ZC and try it out.

OK I couldn't be more new to this forum and I've had a dern easy time getting around in it! YAY for the devs! However this thread is the closest I've come to my actual question.

I'm creating a custom graphic mug site ( http://yours-by-design.com ) and I would like to figure out how to make it so they could upload their graphic directly to the order so I could design their mug and ship it instead of having to email it to me and so on. What do I do? and Where do I go?

I would think that this can still be done with v1.3.9d (the latest as we write this).

Just make sure you backup all and sundry before making your changes. Or even better - test it in a cloned environment before going live.

"does it do it now?"
The image upload feature has been available in core Zen Cart for years, and is essentially the same now as then.

ok so how? there isn't a category named "options" in the admin section

Have you looked in the tutorials? A search for "attributes" leads to How do I add attributes to my products?

Admin > Catalog > Option Name Manager >> enter name and order, select "File" type in dropdown box, click "insert".

Note: You will benefit greatly from spending some time going through the admin. Look at every page, follow every link, even if you think it isn't useful to you. Later, you may remember seeing something that relates to a task you face.

I have spent quite some time looking at it and trying to figure it out before I posted... I didn't even join until I knew I couldn't find the answer... it's funny because as soon as I joined I found 2 of the answer! LOL but none of them were about this particular version.. I believe my biggest problem is I'm not quite grasping the language and trying to find what I need without knowing what they called it.. well it makes it much more difficult.. lol. Thanks for the answer.. Attributes! I'll look for that :)

Re: Is this something we can do with Zen Cart?

Most advice related to v1.3.8 is also correct for v1.3.9, as this is principally a bugfix and security upgrade version. Depending on the topic, advice from earlier 1.3.x versions and even 1.2.x may still apply. Some of the code has not been changed in 5 to 7 years; that will all be wiped out in the next release, v2.0, as the front end is being more or less totally rewritten.

O.o tell them I'll owe them a kiss if they'll make the image uploader thingy easier to use :) and the idea about the pic being available in the invoices would be SUPER cool!!!

Re: Is this something we can do with Zen Cart?

The FILE UPLOAD feature is a characteristic of the ATTRIBUTES function in zencart.

A FILE can be any computer-generated "file" and could be images, documents, spreadsheets, PDF's... anything. (SEE NOTE BELOW).

This is set up as an attribute - just as you would set up any other attribute (eg: size, colour, etc, for clothing items).

With the FILE attribute, you go through the same process of choosing an OPTION NAME, but you select "File" as the Option Name "type". (For an attribute for "Size" you would probably choose "Dropdown" as the Option Name "type".)

By giving the Option Name a "type" called "File", you have the capacity to now append that attribute to any product (just as you would the "Size" and "Colour" attributes).

This will enable a "File Upload" field in that product's attribute selections.

If you follow the tutorials on Attributes, you will see that the basic logic that applies to setting up one kind of attribute, also applies to the "File" attribute.

NOTE: you govern the file TYPE by indicating the permitted file extensions, in ADMIN >>> CONFIGURATION >>> MAXIMUM VALUES ...Allowed Filename Extensions for uploading (and look also at the file size max)

Re: Is this something we can do with Zen Cart?

:D ok I was able to install the attribute but.... this is what it looks like in the preview:

but the problem is when you go to the main cart it looks like:

the buttons are not there and the link is text not a link... so it does nothing.. I must have missed a step :(
