Install Zen Cart v1.3.8 - Instructions it comes with not working for me?

Hey guys,

im in the process of setting up my new site. I have never used Zen Cart before only OSCommerce.

Im having problems installing it. I purchased a template from template monster and I have followed instructions and cant get it to work.

Can some one tell me the exact way to install it? I mean from what files i need to upload, then where to locate the installation files etc etc.

thanks heaps for your time

What is it you can't get to work? Zencart or your TM template?

Re: Install Zen Cart v1.3.8 - Instructions it comes with not working for me?

Ive already gone through those tutorials, but where i keep getting stuck is the bit that says 'Upload the Zen Cart™ fileset to your webserver' which files do i upload??

also i can't find the dis-configure.php file. its not in the includes folder.

so i just want to understand something. there are 2 sections to installing zen cart, right?

1 is the zen cart software and 2nd is the template??

i need help with both, all feedback is greatly appreciated

thanks heaps

FTP all of the folders and files to your website or the folder you want to install Zen Cart in.

Alternately, you might be able to upload the zip file and unzip it on the server.

Through your webmaster panel, create a database for your Zen Cart. Make note of the database name, user ID and password.

After that, go to http://www.yourdomain.com/zc_install (if uploaded to the root) or http://www.yourdomain.com/zcfolder/zc_install (if uploaded to a separate folder). Once you do that, you'll be prompted for the rest.

Template Monster templates are notorious for being difficult to work with. There are free templates available which you can use as-is or further customize. You can see them at http://(sorry, site offline)/

Re: Install Zen Cart v1.3.8 - Instructions it comes with not working for me?

Load and install zencart FIRST.

DO NOT try to put in a new template until zencart standard is installed and working.

New templates are installed AFTER you get the basic zencart system up and running.

TemplateMonster templates are likely to give you big headaches down the line.

Unless you are a PHP, CSS, HTML and MySQL expert, then you should rather NOT use TM templates.

Re: Install Zen Cart v1.3.8 - Instructions it comes with not working for me?

The /languages/, /modules/ and /templates/ folders should be inside the /includes/ folder, so all you have to do is upload the /includes/ folder to the root of your Zen Cart installation. The folders and files inside it will drop into their correct places. If there is a sql file, you should run that through admin > Tools Install SQL Patches.

All this is AFTER you have installed Zen Cart by uploading the fileset, navigating to the folder location in your browser, and running zc_install. It will walk you through the process.

Given that message, your best bet is probably to delete everything in the folder that holds your Zen Cart files and start over, installing ZC before uploading the template files.

What you have got is a TEMPLATE... not the zencart operating software.

CLICK HERE for the Zencart software...

UNZIP it on your home computer.

FTP the zencart software to your server.

RUN the zencart INSTALL system

CONFIGURE your store basics.

THEN... install your TM template.

Before you use a TM Template, you may want to read other posts on this forum about some of the issues relating to TM.

Their templates do "work", but you may have some interesting situations later when you want to make your own modifications, or add some extra features.

Remember to READ and FOLLOW all the instructions in the DOCUMENTS folder, after you unzip the zencart software...

Re: Install Zen Cart v1.3.8 - Instructions it comes with not working for me?

hey guys,

thank you so much for your help.

i got it working sort off. After installing it and setting up a database now im getting this error message. Warning: I am able to write to the configuration file: /home/itsdvdti/public_html/store/includes/configure.php. This is a potential security risk - please set the right user permissions on this file (read-only, CHMOD 644 or 444 are typical). You may need to use your webhost control panel/file-manager to change the permissions effectively. Contact your webhost for assistance. See this FAQ'

not sure why. Im using fileZilla as my FTP client. i have right clicked on the file and set the perimission to 444 and 644 and neither seem to work. (it was on 644 before) how can i get rid of this?

thanks

Danny

Re: Install Zen Cart v1.3.8 - Instructions it comes with not working for me?

Some webhosts do not allow 444 to be set via FTP...

... you must log into your hosting account C-Panel and change permissions there.

Re: Install Zen Cart v1.3.8 - Instructions it comes with not working for me?

Hi, i cant find nothing in my cpanel that allows me to change permissions, I spoke to some1 from my hosting compnay and they told me as 'we use suphp, you'll need to google "suphp zencart" to find a fix for that coming up.'

I have googled but most of things that are coming up are from people who have 'updated' their site. I havnt it, it was new install

There's no file manager in your CPanel? :shocking: That's where you'd be able to change the permissions.

Re: Install Zen Cart v1.3.8 - Instructions it comes with not working for me?

Danny,

I am having a similar problem, although I just installed Zen Cart for the 1st time and it's working properly. I, too purchased a template from TM and still having trouble installing it. I installed Zen Cart through Fantasico in cPanel and it took 2 mins tops to install perfectly and work like a dream. Maybe that's an option for you if you have it in cPanel. I had previously tried installing in manually and was having tons of problems. I too am using FileZilla and was having problems changing permissions. Except for me it wouldn't save the changes.

I was wondering how you got the template to install? I followed the online video tutorial and even did online/chat tech support with them and what they suggested didn't work for me. I had to re-installed Zen Cart completely after it. So I was wondering what you did to get the template install properly.

Thank you,
Angela

Re: Install Zen Cart v1.3.8 - Instructions it comes with not working for me?

The problem with Fantastico is that they don't always have the latest version of Zen Cart available. Please check the forum for information on the latest updates/patches.

As noted earlier:

  1. your FTP client isn't always the best way to change the permissions on files. Use the file manager from your webmaster panel (usually CPanel - outside Zen Cart).

  2. Template Monster templates can cause issues. Check the forum for more information on them.

Re: Install Zen Cart v1.3.8 - Instructions it comes with not working for me?

Hi angmini,

basically what i had done was i downloaded the zen cart software from their website.

i then coppied it accross to the serva via FileZilla after which i just went to my https://www.mydomain.com/zc_install

followed instructions and got the default one up and running.

then i went back into FileZilla and the copied accross the /includes folder (which is under the template name) and copied it into the folder of where all the files are. exmple my store is located at https://www.itsdvdtime.com/store so i copied in the includes folder to the /store folder on the server. Once done i loged into my admin section of ZenCart and went to the tools tab, last line there (i think it was called sql patches or something like that) i then uploaded all the sql files which where in my template.

and that its. but now im having some other problems with the configue.php. i need to some how put it as read only but i cant figure it out.

AFO.

Thanks mate, got that working. I was actully looking for something that said permission (im an amature) thanks heaps for your help

You may like to try the CHMOD (permissions) fix suggested here:
