Need help with attributes please

I have a brand new store just set up. Most recent version of Zen. The person that set everything up for me just had a baby, and everything is working except I'm getting red lights instead of green lights when I link my attributes for my downloads. She said before she had her baby that she thought it was all set up like her store so it should all work, but I need to get stuff loaded in my store for our grand opening and she is in the hospital and I've read through what I can and it is all over my head. I've used zen stores and know how to link it all up from another store I sell at, so I think I must have my folder in the wrong part of my FTP or I have the path wrong or something minor, but I can't figure out what it is.

On my FTP (HostMonster) I have a /downloads folder in the main directory and I have my designer folder inside that one. When I try to link my attributes, I'm typing my designerfolernumber/linkname.zip exactly the way it is on the FTP but the light is red. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or if I need to move that designer folder out of the downloads folder? Any help for dummies would be greatly appreciated.:huh:

Re: Need help with attributes please

The Download directory should be called:
/download

without the S on the end ...

Re: Need help with attributes please

That's the way I had it first, and it wasn't working then, so I read something that said downloads, so I changed it, but it isn't working either way.

Re: Need help with attributes please

Should that download folder be in the main directory or in another one of the folders?

Re: Need help with attributes please

I see a /includes in two different folders, in the /admin folder (that we renamed so it isn't called admin anymore) and in the /store folder. I don't see a /pub folder anywhere. Sorry I'm such a pain.

Re: Need help with attributes please

You should have:
/your_admin_dir
/your_admin_dir/includes
/download
/includes
/pub

and the rest of the folders ...

I changed the configure files for her and changed them to direct the downloads to the root directory, above the public_html file... if that makes sense. I had trouble getting mine to work when I did it as well. I ended up having to do it differently. So I did it the way it directed in the tutorial and then just did it the same way as mine.

This is how I have hers set up:

define('DIR_FS_DOWNLOAD', '/home/username/');

So now when they add an attribute to a product they specify the folder name then the file name in the attribute field like this:

download/file_name.zip

Will this not work for her? This is how I set it up on mine and it works fine. She also is planning on adding separate manufacturers later with their own admin profiles and their own download files.

Re: Need help with attributes please

Did you do both configure.php files?

/includes/configure.php
/your_admin_dir/includes/configure.php

Re: Need help with attributes please

Is this site run in the root directory of the site or in a subdirectory such as /shop or /store or /catalog ...

If so, you need to add that to that changes you have made ...

I am not sure why you are making those changes, but if you plan to use them, they do need to be specific ...

Re: Need help with attributes please

Is this not correct? Is there another way to accomplish the end result? Or am I doing it wrong? Thanks for your help.

Re: Need help with attributes please

Nothing wrong with that method, just make sure the path to your Download directory is correct in both configure.php files ...

Re: Need help with attributes please

I believe they are correct. That is the problem. They should be correct but the attributes are still not quite linking up correctly. I will include what I have for those 2 files for your review to make sure I have done it correctly.

In the /admin/includes/configure.php:

  define('DIR_FS_CATALOG_LANGUAGES', DIR_FS_CATALOG . 'includes/languages/');
  define('DIR_FS_CATALOG_IMAGES', DIR_FS_CATALOG . 'images/');
  define('DIR_FS_CATALOG_MODULES', DIR_FS_CATALOG . 'includes/modules/');
  define('DIR_FS_CATALOG_TEMPLATES', DIR_FS_CATALOG . 'includes/templates/');
  define('DIR_FS_BACKUP', DIR_FS_ADMIN . 'backups/');
  define('DIR_FS_EMAIL_TEMPLATES', DIR_FS_CATALOG . 'email/');
  define('DIR_FS_DOWNLOAD', '/home/username/');

In the includes/configure.php:

  define('DIR_FS_DOWNLOAD', '/home/username/');
  define('DIR_FS_DOWNLOAD_PUBLIC', DIR_FS_CATALOG . 'pub/');
  define('DIR_WS_UPLOADS', DIR_WS_IMAGES . 'uploads/');
  define('DIR_FS_UPLOADS', DIR_FS_CATALOG . DIR_WS_UPLOADS);
  define('DIR_FS_EMAIL_TEMPLATES', DIR_FS_CATALOG . 'email/');

Keep in mind that the download folder will be specified in the attribute file path itself to complete the download path.
(Example: "download folder"/file_name.zip)
My understanding is this would allow for multiple manufactures to upload their own files and have their own "download folders" to upload to without having access to the other manufacturers files.

Let me know if I need to change this. Thanks again for your help.

Re: Need help with attributes please

You are sure it is:
/home/username/

and not something like:
/home/username/public_html/

or something like:
/home/username/public_html/shop/

Go to the Admin and check the Tools ... Server Info ... and see what the:
DOCUMENT_ROOT

is for the full path ... and compare to the:
SCRIPT_FILENAME

to see if you need an additional directory in there ...

Re: Need help with attributes please

I was inputting it as /home/username/ because the tutorial I listed instructed to do this so that the downloads folder is not accessible from the internet.

If I input it as /home/username/public_html/ or /home/username/public_html/shop/ the downloads folder will be accessible from the internet correct?

If I am wrong on this let me know. I just assumed this needed to be done since it instructed to do this in the tutorial I shared. I will check what you have listed above though to double check.

Re: Need help with attributes please

I do not know where you have your Download directory ...

Make sure that the path that you use it the correct one based on where you put your Download directory and what you call it ...

The, make sure it is in both configure.php files so that they both can see it correctly ...

Re: Need help with attributes please

She did have her downloads folder in the public_html/store location which was accessible to internet hackers. I have moved the downloads folder above the public_html location so it is no longer accessible. The file path I would need to use in both configure.php files is home/username/... correct?

What am I missing here? Both configure files have the file path of home/username/ and the specific folder in the location is stipulated in the attribute file path. So what am I missing? Probably something really simple. Sorry to be so repetitive.

Re: Need help with attributes please

I have mine site in a subdirectory ... like www.my_domain_name.com/store

I change the define for the Download Directory to be above the public_html and in a different directory name, in this case the the S on the end of downloads and use in both configure.php files:

  define('DIR_FS_DOWNLOAD', '/home/myusername/downloads/');

I enter the Download filename on the Attribute as either:
test.zip when in the /home/myusername/downloads

or when in a subdirectory ...
otherdirectory/test.zip when in the /home/myusername/downloads/otherdirectory

Note: my define for the directory name has the / on the end of it ...
