Re: broken image and want it removed

The broken image link is:

http://baby-information.co.uk/newshop/image1.gif

Which when directly accessed produces this:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /newshop/image1.gif on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

Which means it's a permissions issue.

Re: broken image and want it removed

RescoCCC:

The broken image link is:

http://baby-information.co.uk/newshop/image1.gif

Why is this image apparently located in a folder called /newshop/ but your other images (without a problem) are located in the /images/ folder (where they should be)?

It appears to be that you hard coded the link (the full URL) to this image whilst you was developing the 'new store', and neglected to adjust it for the live store.

If it is intentional that this image is located in the folder called /newstore/ then you will need to check both the folder and the file permissions to see why you are getting permission denied.

Cheers
Rod.

The site is still really slow to load.

Re: broken image and want it removed

my question was, when you first land on my page, under the banner their is a square with a red X in it, why is this happening,
then someone said my site is loading slow so i asked why is it doing this,
i then realised that the problem i am on about (the red X) is something to do with the product thing that i can't think of at the mooment,,,,,

Re: broken image and want it removed

BABY-INFORMATION:

yea you have said that, i do not know why it is slow,

It's probably because all of those offsite links, banners, adverts and other stuff that you have on your front page.

BABY-INFORMATION:

I have also looked for this image1.gif i did not have it in my folder,

I think this goes a long way to solving your problem, don't you?

On the other hand, it was there when you posted your original message. The error message you reported tells us so.

BABY-INFORMATION:

i have tried to upload another pic's and named it the same

When a person says they've 'tried', it usually means they had a problem.
Did you or didn't you upload another replacement picture?

The answer needs to be "Yes" or "no" If you cannot answer with one or the other then we simply cannot help you any further.

BABY-INFORMATION:

and still got the red x thing in the corner

There is an important lesson that you need to learn. WE DON'T ALL SEE WHAT YOU CAN SEE!!!

I told you before, I don't see a 'red x thing'. I'm using firefox. You must be using one of the many other browsers, probably some MS offering.

Not important though, luckily for you, most people around here are aware of these things and can guess what you are trying to relate to us.. but you are NOT making it easy.

Anyway, the red x basically means one thing, for some reason or other the image can't be loaded.

Your first post told us that this was due to it being a 'permission denied'. The solution therefore is to fix the permissions. Nothing more, nothing less. We can't do this for you, and we are not going to give step by step instructions of the dozens of ways to change file permissions. We don''t know what tools you have at your disposal, or what you are familiar with.

If you don't know how to set file permissions (whether it be on your own computer, or a hosted website) then turn your computer off and go read a book.

BABY-INFORMATION:

have tried to upload another pic's and named it the same and still got the red x thing in the corner

I named mine the same too (whatever that actually means. Same as what??). Changing the name of a file doesn't change its permissions.

This is not rocket science. "Permission denied" means the server doesn't have permission to read the file.

If a file can't be found, IOW, if it doesn't exist in the place that is being specified then the error message will be "File not found".

So, how about you start afresh.. DOES the file exist in the directory/folder specified? If not, put it there. If you TRY to put it there, but it doesn't go, then let us know the error you get when trying. Along with this info it would be useful to know what program you are using to upload with. We don't all use the same programs that you do.

If the file does exist in the location it is expected, then you are back to your original problem of 'permission denied', ergo, you must therefore fix the permissions.

Apologies for being harsh. but I know from experience that most people will view this thread, shake their heads and move onto someone that is going to be 'less work'.

Although we haven't been able to give you the answer you need, we have given you more than enough information for you to fix the issue without further help. The only thing more that we can do is log onto your hosting account and fix it for you.

Rgds

Re: broken image and want it removed

I think Rod has given you the run-down quite well.

You are trying to create a Rolls Royce jet-engine, but right now you only have the skills to build a bicycle.

Nothing wrong with that... everybody starts somewhere. But if you are going to eventually build the jet engine, then you need to learn the basics first.

Helpers on this forum have to assume that people coming for help already know the fundamentals of HTML, server management, FTP, and other "web-mastering" skills. These are not taught here... by the time people get here, they should know this stuff.

The main reason it is not taught here is that it is already available elsewhere on the WWW, and this is a forum about Zencart - not general webmastering.

Essentially, your site is a mess. I cannot be "polite" about it. You are adding far too much, and most of it is unrelated to what you want to do, and how you want to achieve it. The result is a confusing, mash-up of mostly irrelevant material, that takes ages to load and has no coherent purpose.

You don't appear to understand file optimisation, HTML and CSS validation, and the directory structure on your server.

It's really great that you want to do this... I respect and admire that, and encourage you to keep going! But don't try to fly before you can crawl...

Re: broken image and want it removed

I come back to my point. There is little to be gained by "pretending" that something is "ok" when it isn't.

The internet (and eCommerce in particular) is a ruthless and unforgiving environment. Your competitors are only a "mouse-click" away, and if their sites are even just 5% more efficient that yours, people will shop with them.

When you decide to put your business online, your first consideration is not technology... or peppering a web-page with content.

It is a business decision - and (as far as I am concerned) this requires researching your competitors, your market sector and your business potential.

Then, when you are ready to develop a site, look at all the competitors you can find - including the big ones. Develop a "best-practice" approach, based on what you find. Set some minimum standards based on both good an bad sites you discover.

If you (as you have done) just dive in with g a y abandon, your efforts will be wasted, and the time you spend will be fruitless.

About 90% of new-business eCommerce sites fail in their first year. Of the remaining 10%, nearly half fail within three years.

(This is not my research, but an amalgamation of data from forrester, eConsultancy, MORI and others.)

Now... imagine if we just sat here saying that everything was "ok" with your current strategy... My bet would be that you will quickly fall into that 90% mentioned earlier.

Re: broken image and want it removed

Thanks for coming back. And there is no need for you to apologise. You did nothing wrong, except vent a little frustration.

I remember my early days with CMS systems, PHP, MySQL, CSS and all the rest and that was not long ago... (September 2004 I had my first go with OsCommerce - and it was a complete DISASTER!.

It took me nearly 6 months to get up-to-speed - but I went away and studied basic web-mastering, css, and the basics of how php and databases work together.

I am STILL no expert... but I know enough to get by.

You WILL succeed at this - just keep at it.

This forum is a massive resource of knowledge and skill, and I use it daily to find solutions to problems I encounter all the time.

I wish you all the best with your venture.

Re: broken image and want it removed

Yeah, I think all of us understand the frustration that comes with the very early stages of learning this stuff. As for your site now, you asked for it.

Your hover color for the menu bar links is too light. It nearly disappears when hovering. The color combination - background, a-link, hover - for your side menu is ghastly. In fact, the color theme for the site as a whole needs a lot of work. I understand the reasoning behind it. It's babies. But, the pink is too neony and the salmon just doesn't work as a secondary color.

The header graphic off to the left with the white space at the right looks amateurish. Having the layout edge-to-edge looks really bad on a wide-screen monitor. Better to shrink the width to around 950px. Your left and right sideboxes are misaligned.
