Subscriptions added automatically when responding to a post

Just because I respond to a post doesn't mean that I want a notification when that post is updated. Subscriptions should be an opt-in feature.

Agree completely and a "bulk" remove for subscriptions would be really nice.

Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.

Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.

Re: Subscriptions added automatically when responding to a post

I thought that this is the way that vbulletin operated

I'm worried that people who reply to a thread will expect to be notified of other replies

but happy to add a bulk unsubscribe

Re: Subscriptions added automatically when responding to a post

I guess we could add a checkbox to subscribe when you reply to a thread

The is an Unsubscribe button at the top of each thread - Can that become a Subscribe instead of the auto-sub?

There would only be an Unsubscribe button if you are already subscribed to a thread
otherwise there would be a subscribe button

Oh silly me! You are correct.

Re: Subscriptions added automatically when responding to a post

Thanks for the feedback, and sorry about the extra emails. Replying to a thread used to subscribe you to it automatically, which wasn't what many of you wanted. That has changed:

  • Replying no longer subscribes you. There's now a Subscribe to this thread box on the reply form, and it's unticked by default. If you're already subscribed to a thread, the box doesn't appear.
  • Starting a thread still subscribes you, so you hear about the answers. The box on the new thread form starts ticked, and you can untick it before posting if you'd rather not.
  • Want replies to subscribe you automatically? In Account Settings (under your avatar), open the Settings tab and use Subscribe When I Reply. That sets the starting state of the box on the reply form, and you can still change it on each post.

Threads you were already subscribed to stay as they were, so you may want to clear some out:

  • Go to Account Settings → Subscriptions. You can tick several threads and use Unsubscribe selected, or use Unsubscribe from all threads to start fresh.
  • Under Account Settings → Settings you can also switch thread emails off completely, or choose a daily or weekly digest instead of an email for every reply.

Let me know if anything isn't working the way you'd expect.
