Multilingual zencart

Hello,

I am new to zen cart, and I didn't find information about this issue.
I would like a truely multilingual cart. I have purchase pages in 3 languages
now. What I would like to see is that if I call the online shop from a Japanese
page, it simply displays in Japanese and the cart is configured to buy in yens.
If I call the cart from a French page, it should display in French, and the
currency should be configured to Euros and so on for the upcoming languages.
Having a configuration button (default in english and the user chooses after
coming to the online shop) is one step too much.

Is there already a pointer existing to help me to do this?

Thanks,

Pascal

Re: Multilingual zencart

mean to say the downloads page --- there is a multi language pack in the languages download section. I did not really read it but that's the title of it.

Re: Multilingual zencart

Zen Cart is inherently multilingual. Text and textual buttons are held in folders specific to each language and drawn upon depending upon which language the visitor selects.

This is built into the structure and doesn't require add-ons (unless you want multilingual EZ-Pages!), though you would probably want the French and Japanese language packs to give you a headstart.

There is not however an explicit linkage between language and currency. Normally visitors indicate language and their choice of currency, though as they are held as session variables it would be pretty easy to set them to your preferred values when beginning to build the entry page for the cart, which would achieve what you are after (but probably frustrate a minority of visitors).

Re: Multilingual zencart

Go to your admin.

Click on Configuration, click my store.

In there, look for Switch to Default Language Currency and set it on true. (its false by default. When it's done, when you change your language, you will automatically change the currency at the same time.

Hope it helps.
Pascal, if you speak French, I do to :-)

Re: Multilingual zencart

Have you seen the userCurrency mod in Downloads?

It automatically sets currency based on user location, with user-selectable options, and has other configurable features.

So do I get this right?
If I go to Administration>Configuration>My Store and switch** Default Language Currency** to true, Zen cart will show my site in the appropriate language according to the visitor. And if I add information pages by adding files in the directory which stores main_page.php etc instead of using the ez-pages, it should all convert into the appropriate language?
Then if I add the module User Currency, zen cart will include multiple currency options as well.

Is that correct please?

Re: Multilingual zencart

Zen Cart only comes with English out of the box. If you want other languages, you will need to download and install them (there are language packs for many common languages).

Zen Cart will open in whatever language you set as default, and display flags for the installed languages so the user can switch if desired. The Default Language Currency switch presets the currency to match the default language.

The User Currency mod reportedly will detect the user's location and set currency display accordingly, but it will not change the displayed language. That would require additional coding.

Information pages built as separate pages (not ez-pages) will automatically draw from the correct language folder, but you will need to create the translations first and put them in that folder.

Re: Multilingual zencart

Look around the forums for professional members and contact them privately, or post in Commercial Help Wanted for that.

First, you might try installing a language pack and see how difficult (or not) it is. Practice installing mods on a test store, and it will get easier.

This is good general advice, but can you give some more clues on how to install (say) the Japanese pack?

Failing that, can you point us towards info somewhere so I can RFM item about language installations generally.

Thanks

Ulysses:

can you give some more clues on how to install (say) the Japanese pack? That depends upon which Japanese language pack. They take completely different approaches. If you're not Japanese, I'd recommend CrystalKoi's pack and the clue would be - read the installation notes.

Thanks Kuroi. Am now both wiser and better informed. More to the point, we managed to get CrystalKoi's Japanese language pack working.

Re: Multilingual zencart

Glenn, have you encountered this? My Default Language Currency switch is not behaving as expected.

I installed German language pack a few months ago, and automatic changing of currency worked fine when language changed. I've since done a clean install of ZC and just today decided to install German language pack again, but now currency is not changing when language changes. My Admin Config Store setting is correct and I've checked the code in german.php and it looks fine also.

Does anyone know if this is just a simple connection that I could check? I have a different ZC template now then I did a few months ago, but even when I try the old classic template the linkage between language and currency is not working. Thanks ..

Re: Multilingual zencart

Well, this linkage issue w/ language/currency is caused by the CEON URI mapping code that works using a mod_rewrite rule, which are often difficult to get just right w/o mucking up anything.

Conor's CEON URI mapping module is awesome, but the rewrite must be grabbing some code being passed that the language/currency link depends on. As soon as I turned off URI mapping, the currency immediately began changing with language again.
