Problems with thumbnails on the product info page

I've uploaded all of my images to my server, and I'm pretty sure that I've got them numbered correctly.

For multiple images/product, they're named prod1_1.jpg, prod1_2.jpg. These images are the thumbnails, sized at a maximum size of 125x200px. The full size images are named prod1_1_l, prod1_2_l, etc... (I've set the image_large_suffix to '_l').

My problem is that the 'Show Larger' link at the top of the product info page shows the thumbnail when it's clicked on. The alternate image 'Show Larger' links at the bottom of the description have links to both the thumbnail, and full size images, and some are duplicated.

What am I doing wrong?

Here's a link to a page with multiple images, that is having all of the problems that I described above. Just a warning though, the site is selling lingerie & panties, so it might not be safe for work, depending on where you work.

At the moment all your images are being treated as additional images and are linking only to themselves when the larger images link is clicked. To solve this move the larger images into a folder called "large" inside your images folder.

My images are in the /images/products directory. Should I put the large images in the /images/products/large directory, or /images/large?

I've moved the images to the specified directory. I'm not getting the duplicates now, but I'm still just getting the thumbnail image when I click on the enlarge link.

Do the files still need the '_l' suffix since they're in their own directory? Should I still use 'large' as the subdirectory name, even though I've changed the large image suffix to '_l'?

Have you told Zen Cart that you are not using the default suffix for large images (Admin > Configuration > Images)?

Yes, I've set both variables.

Product Info - Image Medium Suffix = _m
Product Info - Image Large Suffix = _l

I've tried having the large and medium files in the same directory, and also putting them in 'large' and 'medium' sub directories.

Itty bitty typo on the directory naming ...

Main directory:

/images
/images/medium
/images/large

Subdirectory:

/images/products
/images/medium/products
/images/large/products

I am having a problem with images.
If I put the images in the standard directories everything looks fine.

/images (for small images 160 x120 pixels)
/images/medium (images are 320 x 240 pixels)
/images/large (images are 640 x 480 pixels)

However, I would like to put them in the following directories

/images/myimages (for small images 160 x120 pixels)
/images/medium/myimages (images are 320 x 240 pixels)
/images/large/myimages (images are 640 x 480 pixels)

If I do that ZC can not find the images.

I have looked in the Admin to find where I can change the path, but did not find it.
Is there a file that needs to be altered to give ZC the correct guidance?

OK, - I was dumb on the small images. Just go to ZC Admin - catalog – categories/products and browse to the correct file. However, ZC still can’t find the large and medium images. Any ideas?

To the right of the "browse" field is a dropdown for directory to load image to, set to Main by default. If you have your /myimages/ folder set up, it should appear as a choice in the dropdown.

Yep, I see that directory (myimages ) in the browse dropdown. And as you said the default is set to Main.

In the past what I had done was first load the small, medium and large images into their respective directories e.g.
images/myimages (for small images 160 x120 pixels)
/images/medium/myimages (images are 320 x 240 pixels)
/images/large/myimages (images are 640 x 480 pixels)

I then went to Admin - catalog – categories/products and browsed to the correct small product image file (in images/myimages) and load it. At first, I did not see the “Upload to directory” not the “default” Main directory. So, although I had the product image in the “images/myimages” directory I also had loaded the product it the default to “Main Directory” which I gather is the “images” directory. And thus I got the small images but nothing else.

However, if I make sure that the “Upload to directory” is set to myimages directory then first, the images name is changed to include “the myimages subdirectory (ie. myimages/MW203.jpg) and then second, the image is loaded to “images/myimages”. I then directly loaded the medium and large images to their respective directories (images/medium/myimages and /images/large/myimages). I checked -

It seems that ZC uses the non default image name (which includes the subdirectory name of the small image to locate the medium and large images.

Do you have a very large number of images that need multiple subdirectories to organize? If not, your life will be easier without the /myimages/.

And yes, the uploading process is time-consuming. If it is a real problem, maybe something like Image Handler 2 or Easy Populate would help. I haven't used either so can only suggest.

The Products URL is for use if you want to link to a manufacturer's page or the like. You can ignore it otherwise.

I have come to the same conclusion you have about not going with the /myimages/ file. I was duplicating the idea found on page 206 of the E-Start book. Since I do not have a very large number of images I believe that I do not need multiple subdirectories to organize. However, the shop is a bit unique in that we only have one piece of any item (product is all hand made jewelry), nothing is mass produced. So, I will need to add a new image (actually three images) and a description for each new piece to be sold. Oh, pain.

I have heard about Image Handler 2 & Easy Populate, but mostly Image Handler 2. I believe there is a thread devoted to Image Handler 2. It is my understanding that Image Handler 2 will “generate and resize small, medium and large images on the fly on page request. You can simply upload just one image or you can have different sources for medium and large images. …it further enables you to watermark your images (overlay a second specific translucent image) and have medium images pop up when you move your mouse over a small image (fancy hover).” It sounds very nice.

I figured that your answer would be “to link to a manufacturer's page” but was not sure. Best to ask, and not ######.U.ME.

IH2 would really shine if you wanted all small/medium/large images to be resized by the same amount and handled the same way. If you wanted different zoom ratios for different products, it might not work so well.

The amount of effort justified for any one listing would be related to the value of the item, IMO. If you have a lot of little beaded bracelets at $15 each, you will be working hard for your income. If you have pieces at $30-$100+ each, that could be worthwhile...

Well, I do want all small/medium/large images to be resized by the same amount and handled the same way so I think IH2 would do well. However, I want to get the site up to 100% before I tackle IH2.

Our pieces run about $35-$120 each with average about $85, so I guess the added work is worthwhile. Talk to you later – because I know I will have additional questions. Thanks.

OK, I move everything to my online site http://sawhorsejewelry.com/ from my local computer. I have most things working on line like my local site. However, I have image problems. The on line site can find my small images buy can not find my medium or large images. This is what I have done.

1st I uploaded my small images to the default location: /public_html/catalog/images
2nd I uploaded my medium images to the default location: /public_html/catalog/images/medium
3rd I uploaded my large images to the default location: /public_html/catalog/images/large

I then went to admin / Categories / Products / Product in Category: "Earrings" and tried to load the Products Image thru the Browse button. However, the only thing I could browse was my local image so I used that location. The Image Name for the product was correct and when I did a preview it looked fine. However, based on prior discussion on this thread I believe that the reason I am not getting my medium and large images is that the path to the small image is incorrect (even though I do get the small images).

So instead of browsing to a local images, I placed in the Products Image: the website location where the small images are located (/public_html/catalog/images). Everything looked fine on the preview. However, no medium or large images are shown on the site.

So, I must be doing something fundamentally incorrect.

The question how do you correctly load images so that both medium and large images show?

Unfortunately your site seems to be down for maintenance so it's not possible to investigate directly.

One area that doesn't seem to have been explored in your questions is how you are naming your medium and large images. Could you give us an example?

Though for the situation you have described, I would recommend Image Handler (You can upload a large image and set parameters for creating small and medium images, not really on the fly, as they are cached so that they only need by created once)
