Uk Sales Tax - Need to charge everyone

Hi all,

Our accountant has just told us that we need to charge everyone without a VAT number outside of the UK the 20% sales Tax.
Up till now we have exempted everyone outside of the UK.

I tried setting up a simple tax zone to include all countries / all zones - while this worked , it is also linked to the Shipping.
So i then could not define separate shipping zones to charge people outside of UK Zone rate and not get the Free shipping options we have in place.
As most of our customers are individuals and dont have VAT codes I would set this up for them and process Companies with VAT numbers in a different way outside of Zen.

Has anyone created this sort of scenario yet as the Tax / Shipping etc is all linked.

Are you sure that is correct?...Everyone in the EU I think that should be...

I trade from spain and I think the same rules apply anywhere in the EU:
a) sales inside spain include VAT/IVA (spain 21%/UK 20%)
b) sales outside spain + inside EU include VAT/IVA (spain 21%/UK 20%), UNLESS the purchaser can provide a registered (with the EU) VAT number for inter-comunity vat-exempt purchases (ie is a business)
b) sales outside spain + outside EU do not include VAT/IVA. ie the Canary islands and everywhere else in the world.
The idea is that the local customs authority in the destintation country will levy the appropriate import duty AND that countries sales tax.

Hi Steve,

You are spot on.

So I need to create 3 zones by the look of it, UK , EU and Rest of World.
Companies who have VAT number can call us to zero rate it , I want to catch the 90% who don't have a Vat number.

In theory it seems simple, but even each product has a tax class yo can select so how does / will it function ?

I have two payment zones:
those who pay VAT: all the EU countries
those who do not pay VAT: all the other countries

Our shop is aimed purely at end-users, not businesses, who prefer to call or email anyway. Those businesses who want to buy ex-vat don't go through the shop, we manually invoice them.
