Re: Westminster New v 1.3 UPDATE
I also like the way it functions overall and the great addons and extensions it has, makes it more app-like. The header, footer, and search box are especially nice as well as making the whole line an active area instead of a small box at the right side of each link and submenus sliding out instead of dropping down. Very slick indeed.
In the process of switching everything to work with css/js loader for easier future modifications. Then I'll be testing some swipe scripts so things like featured products can be swiped to make it even more app-like. I have a number of changes I'm going to make and will share them if there is any interest.

Yep I agree, and on smartphones in particular I think this is a better way of navigating.. I am starting to look at integrating swipe actions into a slider (not necessarily the one that comes with this template as I may swap that out too), and adding swipe to Zen Colorbox as well.. (lightbox and it's underlying Slimbox library are just too old to mess with)

Agree, basically I am going to make the mobile view as app-like as possible to match people's expectations of their mobile experiences from elsewhere. Never used a responsive template before so I am currently spending time familiarizing myself with the files so I know where to go to make changes.

That sounds EXACTLY like the discussion I just had the other day with my client on the direction we're moving with her site and the swaps and changes I plan to make accordingly.. We have been doing an informal usability study with a group of her current customers, and their feedback was invaluable. (some even provided links to other sites they shop with to help guide some of the changes we're now going to be making) The first step is changing the mobile menu to one that looks more like the typical menus used in Android and iOS apps.. There are other things we're going to do some more usability testing on like for example, we haven't decided if we'll use the hamburger menu or the vertical ellipse as the menu icon.. Both are used in mobile applications to symbolize a menu.. That may sound silly, but it's all about providing intuitive features and a good usability experience for site visitors. What I am finding is that it's just not enough for the template to work on a mobile device.. The mobile experience has to be a good user experience or one will find themselves with high bounce rates from mobile users..

Re: Westminster New v 1.3 UPDATE
since we're not all reinventing the same wheel, I created a git for collaboration. Although I really want to change the structure to work with the css/js loader and I don't know how everyone else feels about that, we can still collaborate on mutual goals. It will take me a few days to finish getting up to speed with the file layout and how it all works since it's all new to me.

I would definitely not want the css/js loader plugin integrated into the template. I feel that the decision to integrate this is best left to the template user.

Highlights of this post..
Quote:
I have made no secret my disdain for the CSS/JS loader. I am not opposed to the BENEFIT it is supposed to bring.. What I've always objected to is the fact that it's not just difficult for beginners, it's difficult for folks who are NOT beginners too.. I find that the CSS/JS Loader is poorly documented, not user friendly, lacking in ANY admin level controls so that you can strategically manage how the minification is applied. In it's current form, it's either ON or OFF.. there's no in between.. WTH??? and here's ALL the instruction you get in the readme for when things go wrong (which for many is usually as soon as you turn this very non-configurable module ON..):
Quote:
I NEVER like the fact that nearly every single one of a popular contributor's modules FORCES you to install the CSS/JS Loader whether you want it or not.. With all due respect, I personally find that the "we know what's good for you better than you do" stance taken by this contributor is a bit akin to the "Borg" in Star Trek (you know.. that whole "resistance is futile" POV :laugh: ).

Re: Westminster New v 1.3 UPDATE
Not a problem, to each their own. I will use the git for the general changes like navigation and touch abilities etc and then fork it to work with the loader for those interested in it. Or, if no one here is really interested in doing this I will just use it for my own purposes and for those that want to incorporate the loader. I guess just let me know what the interest level is.

I'm interested in the the navigation and touch capabilities as it is a direction I was moving towards.. I am not against the benefit that the CSS/JS Loader is supposed to bring, I object to the execution of these benefits in it's current application.. Which is why the CSS/JS Loader incorporation is not something I'd want..

Re: Westminster New v 1.3 UPDATE
Hi, sorry, I haven't read all 73 pages yet. I'm up to about 15 but have a question as I'm trying to go live today/tomorrow. Is there a way to remove the British flag? To me, it indicates a different country and not the language of English. My site is no international as of yet, so I'd like to hide or remove it. Can someone point me towards what edit I can make? Thanks (great template btw!)
Also, is there a way to make "page 2" be named something else?
-
Re: Westminster New v 1.3 UPDATE
The flag is the language sidebox, just turn it off in the admin.
change the name in includes/languages/your_custom_template/english.php. If you don't have one, create that directory and copy languages/english.php there so it won't be overwritten when upgrading. The developers toolkit, in the tools menu, will become your best friend when making changes to the site. search for page 2 in the bottom field and you can see where it occurs. Same for just about anything else non-database value related.

You can turn off the header languages box in admin--tools--layoutboxes controller
If you do a search of the FAQs section of this site you will find a tutorial about hot so change the name, etc of page 2

Re: Westminster New product_info_display.php tabs
I'd like to get rid of the "Details" tab in the productinfo display. I tried commenting out on line 206 of product_info_display.php: "<li><?php echo HEADER_TITLE_DETAILS; ?></li>" however that got rid of it but also broke the custom tab whereby the custom tabs info was blank.

You also need to comment out the code further down:
Code:
<!--bof Product details list -->
<?php if ( (($flag_show_product_info_model == 1 and $products_model != '') or ($flag_show_product_info_weight == 1 and $products_weight !=0) or ($flag_show_product_info_quantity == 1) or ($flag_show_product_info_manufacturer == 1 and !empty($manufacturers_name))) ) { ?>
<ul id="productDetailsList" class="floatingBox back">
<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_model == 1 and $products_model !='') ? '<li>' . TEXT_PRODUCT_MODEL . $products_model . '</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>
<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_weight == 1 and $products_weight !=0) ? '<li>' . TEXT_PRODUCT_WEIGHT . $products_weight . TEXT_PRODUCT_WEIGHT_UNIT . '</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>
<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_quantity == 1) ? '<li>' . $products_quantity . TEXT_PRODUCT_QUANTITY . '</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>
<?php echo (($flag_show_product_info_manufacturer == 1 and !empty($manufacturers_name)) ? '<li>' . TEXT_PRODUCT_MANUFACTURER . $manufacturers_name . '</li>' : '') . "\n"; ?>
</ul>
<br class="clearBoth" />
<?php
}
?>
<!--eof Product details list -->
Be careful if you nest the comments.
Thanks,
Anne

Re: Westminster New
When I updated the social media links in the footer to link to the correct pages, all the formatting disappeared. Before I changed the links, they displayed like in the demo. Now they are not in boxes and the icons are smaller. I looked in the theme docs and my code in there still seems to be correct. This is what I have:
<a href="https://facebook.com/website" target="_blank"><i class="fa fa-facebook"></i></a>
<a href="https://twitter.com/website" target="_blank"><i class="fa fa-twitter"></i></a>

Oh OK I see. That might be good in the instructions because there is nothing to indicate you can't move things around without changing code (unless I missed it, totally possible!). Thank you!

I don't think this needs to be in the readme. It would be impossible to add instructions for all of the various template modifications people can make. It is a given that if you are going to modify the template you might need to make changes to the css.
Thanks,
Anne

Yes, I totally agree, however, this wasn't a change that required any code changes at first glance. It just used the flexible footer area that is built in to the admin. It would just be nice if there was some kind of indication that moving the columns around will require coding changes as well.

Even though there is an admin interface for the footer menu, it effects the output of the code so yes, it is a "code" change.
Thanks,
Anne

Re: Westminster New
That's exactly what I'm getting at :) The average person wouldn't really think like that, so they'd be confused when they changed the footer in the admin. Having the footer area in the admin leads you to believe no coding is required to edit the footer. I didn't mean you should put in specific info to cover every possibility, just that it might be good to indicate that other coding may still be required after editing the footer in the admin. In any case, it was just a suggestion :) Thanks again for your quick help with this, I really appreciate it!

I agree with Anne.. It isn't necessary for this to be in the readme.. It's a given that if you move things from one column to another that a CSS change will be needed.. It' pretty much a given that most ANYTHING you do to move things from their original positions onany part of the template might require a similar change..

I wonder if this is possible?
I have managed to change Categories in the sidebox and top menu to 'Departments' now I need to add a new top menu item 'Products' between 'Departments and Information'.
Please can you advise me if this is possible and where I should start to look?
Many thanks and kind regards,

Re: Westminster New v 1.3 UPDATE
Hello all.
I am just starting with this template and the first feels and thoughts are very good. I do like the custom slide out functionality; and I am thinking about which content I would locate in there.
In the actual desing there is a link in the header which will lead the customer to the shopping_cart.
Would it be possible to show the content of the customers basket in the custom slide page? So the customer could see his shopping card in there?

Purely from a UX POV, I don't this this is the best or most intuitive place to put the shopping cart..
Just my 3 cents..

Yes, this can be done with custom programming.

Re: Westminster New v 1.3 UPDATE
Hi - sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. I'm using the avonlee template and installing the westminster. When I upload the westminster files the avonlee breaks. The home page sliders shift right and the right sideboxes are gone. I haven't changed anything in admin. I need to have both templates work correctly. Is this possible? If so is there any direction on what i need to repair?
Thank you

It sounds like you have the right hand column turned on in the avonlee contempo. The westminster has the right hand column turned off. If both templates are on the same cart, you would have to change the layout settings in admin--configuration when switching templates.
Thanks,

I also noticed when I go back to the avonlee that the > separator was missing between the category name and count. I set the symbol in config but I only get the symbol in categories that have sub categories. I.e. if there are no sub categories then the separator doesn't show. Would you have any thoughts on this?

Please ignore this for now - trying to figure it out from a backup of the site before installing the Westminster.

Yes I found it - thanks for following up.
I have another question: is there a tutorial or readme on how to customize the top menu? i.e add/remove menu items, change names i.e. change "Conditions of Use" to "Terms and Conditions"?
BTW - it is indeed a great template.

The easiest way to find out which files you need to edit is to use the admin--tools--developers toolkit ;)

Any stable, correctly installed plugin will work with the template. As always, if there are the same files in the plugin package and the template package then you will need to merge the files.

Re: Westminster New
Hi there, thanks for this amazing template! The flexibility of the mobile detect is awesome :)
One question (not sure if it's been covered before - couldn't find it) is there a way of switching between desktop & mobile sites manually? So a link on the mobile site to "show desktop version" and maybe a link on the desktop site to switch back to the mobile version?
I've tried googling it and the only references I can find are to using cookies to set the version and then redirect back to the desktop site (when you have 2 versions of a website) obviously this doesn't apply to this situation though :(
Thanks!

Thanks! I can not take credit for the php mobile detect integration though. This is based on rbarbour's DIY Template Default Package, so kudos go to him ;)
You can switch use these urls:
your url.com/index.php?main_page=index&display_mode=isDesktop
your url.com/index.php?main_page=index&display_mode=isMobile
your url.com/index.php?main_page=index&display_mode=isTablet

Re: Westminster New
Thanks Anne, the URL's are kind of working to switch layouts, it's not 100% though?
For example the site switches from mobile to desktop when the "view desktop" link is clicked but the mobile menus are still rendered instead of the desktop ones, the left column is missing as per the mobile version and the center column that displays the top level categories is still 1 product per row instead of 3 per row (as per the desktop version)
I've added a new check for the 'isDesktop' to alter the viewport so that a user can zoom etc
Code:
<?php
if ($_SESSION['display_mode']=='isDesktop') { ?>
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1, user-scalable=yes" />
<?php } else {?>
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0, maximum-scale=1.0, minimum-scale=1.0, user-scalable=no" />
<?php } ?>
which is working fine?
Ive seen the mobile detect code towards the bottom of the html_header.php file which looks to control the loading of the stylesheets etc and tried tweaking it but nothing seems to fix it properly?
Thanks
Tony

Re: Westminster New
Just a quick update - I think it've just about got it working :)
There is a logic error in the mobile detect in the template - nothing major and most people probably won't want to switch templates like I am doing but just in case they do!
html_header.php change the follwing line
Code:
if ($detect->isMobile() && !$detect->isTablet() or $detect->isMobile() && !$detect->isTablet() && $_SESSION['display_mode']=='isMobile' or $detect->isTablet() && $_SESSION['display_mode']=='isMobile' or $_SESSION['display_mode']=='isMobile') {
echo $responsive_mobile;
to
Code:
if ($detect->isMobile() && !$detect->isTablet() && !$_SESSION['display_mode']=='isDesktop' or $detect->isMobile() && !$detect->isTablet() && $_SESSION['display_mode']=='isMobile' or $detect->isTablet() && $_SESSION['display_mode']=='isMobile' or $_SESSION['display_mode']=='isMobile') {
echo $responsive_mobile;
The first code checks for a mobile device (but not a tablet) and returns true because - well it is true, but it doesn't check for the isDesktop in the $SESSION so it also catches anyone who is on a mobile but has chosen to view the desktop version.
The same code is also in tpl_main_page.php and needs tweaking - this now fixes the column layouts and the missing left column and shows the correct desktop header but I am still missing the desktop main menu... I'll keep digging :)

Hi Anne
Just wanted to say once again, thank you for a great template.
I've updated from 1.5.3 using Sheffield Blue Responsive to 1.5.4 using the Westiminster New template - I'm also only using a couple of add-ons, TwitchWholesale and CEON URi Mapping to keep things simple!
All seems to work ok and it only took me 2 days to complete it all and test it!
Many thanks once again.

I don't know why it is not working for you. The urls work fine on the template package out of the box.
Thanks,
Anne

I have no idea if the changes you made are necessary. I will have to run this by Raymond (rbarbour) to find out.
Thanks,

Re: Westminster New
In my shopping cart it says "You may want to add some instructions for using the shopping cart here. (defined in includes/languages/english/shopping_cart.php)"
I edited this file an uploaded it but it hasn't changes. Am I missing something?
Thanks

No, the text is correct. The zen cart instructions take into account that you will know to make all changes in override files.

Hello all,
I have a problem with the attribute dropdown not displaying all the text assigned to the attribute. e.g. in the attached image the Leg Size can be Reg 31" or Tall 32" but you will see that only Reg 3 is being displayed. Can anybody advise where I go in the CSS or PHP to adjust the size of the attribute display box?
Many thanks in advance,
Bob

Re: Westminster New
Homepage Images
Can someone please help me with the following:
I have disabled the left side slide out panel, and all but one banner image in the "homepageslide" banner group.
Also I have set the hometop banner to HTML text.
Now what I want to do is to have the homepageslide banner image placed behind the hometop banner text. The effect I am looking for is to have the HTML text appear in front of the banner image.
I may be on the wrong track, but I am guessing that I need to code something like this for the homepageslide banner image, . . img {
position: absolute;
left: 0px;
top: 0px;
z-index: -1;
}
Can anyone help ?

If I may interject.. I can't say that I disagree with CosmosK, you and I know to make the changes in the overrides, but a nascent shopowner may not know this instinctively..

Maybe you should post about this in the code suggestions forum so that the developers can change the wording?

Oh I have done just that.. (and much more with regards to the default template..:smile:) Just suggesting that it's not a BAD idea to include that in the template or even the readme.. 'tis all..

I would recommend looking at the website for the flex slider to see if they have instructions for such a customization.
Thanks,
Anne

Sorry for any misunderstanding - but I only refer to the referenced website in order to show you an example of the effect I wish to achieve.
I am using the Westminster New template, and looking for guidance as to the appropriate Westminster templete files, and coding which I might implement, in order to achieve a similar effect?
Regards:)

Hi Anne
Thank you so much for such an amazing template but I would really really like to add a few things and would love it if you you assist me in adding a few things that I personally would like to see on this template without me messing up all the great responsive design you did.
The site currently looks like this: please see the image attached namely "Marshall Now"
As I am relatively new to this I would very much appreciate any and all assistance you could give me in order to make the site look the way I have made it look in Photoshop as depicted in the attached image namely "Marshall Changes"
Thank you for an amazing template and as always your assistance is greatly appreciated
Regards
Erwin

Just had a quick play so it's a bit dirty but you could move the slider image under the home-top div text by
.content-slider {
float: left;
margin-left: -30%; -- you'll need to experiment with the responsive views to see if a % or px is best
width: 65%; -- try altering the width of this and/or slider images to see what fits
and get the home-top div text to overlay the image by
#top-banner {
position: relative;
z-index: 999;

Re: Westminster New
Hi,
I am using your template, which is great thanks. The problem is with viewing it on a mobile, the site reverts back to the classic template? It happens on all mobile devices and ipads.
Do you know what could be causing this? I have probably missed off a file or setting somewhere.
Any pointers would be helpful thanks.

Re: Westminster New
Hi Anne
Thank you so much for your reply.
The link to my site is www.marshallmusicdirect.com
I really just want to make a few changes to the landing page.
1. Right in the top where it says "log in" to the left of it I would like to add a home button that I can route to my main info page to make the site more seamless if you know what I mean. The main info page is www.marshallmusic.co.za which is what I would like this icon to link to.
2. In the same location to the right of "Wish List I would like to add a "Contact us" link
3. I would like to make the search box a little bigger and move it down out of its current location in the black upper row into the free space in the header directly below it. Keeping in line with proportion I would like the manufacturers dropdown bellow the search bar and then directly below that a space where I can insert an image stating that we ship for free on all orders over R1000.00
4. Where the Hometop banner is I would like to display the "category list" for ease of access for clients and extend the width of the slider banner a little for more advertising real estate.
5. Lastly I would like to make the four homead buttons to be small and below the image kind of like the initial layout of the template only I need them to be neatly spaced out below the slider. As if that wasn't already taking way too much advantage I was wondering if you could see if it could possibly still work nicely accross all platforms, Mobile, Desktop as well as tablets.
6. Just to top it all off, I added multiple images to my products and the additional images are so small that they are practically not visible so I was wondering if you could maybe give me a solution for that?
I really appreciate all your help and I will attach the image of more or less what I am looking for in terms of the outcome.
Thank you so very much I really appreciate all everything you assist us all with as I am truly learning so much. This whole PHP thing is so much harder than HTML.
Regards
Erwin

Hi Simon,
I wonder if you can tell me which files you were modifying here?
Cheers

Re: Westminster New
Sure,
.content-slider is in includes\templates\westminster_new\css\stylesheet_flex.css line 1 where the original code is
.content-slider {/*box-shadow: 0 5px 7px -5px #333;*/width:65%;float:right;margin-right:15px;} and change to
.content-slider {/*box-shadow: 0 5px 7px -5px #333;*/width:65%;float:left;margin-left:-30%;margin-right:15px;}
and the #top-banner is in includes\templates\westminster_new\css\stylesheet.css line 347 where the original code is
#top-banner{float:left;margin-left:15px;width:30.5%;} and change to
#top-banner{position:relative;z-index:999;float:left;margin-left:15px;width:30.5%;}
I only considered these changes to apply to the full desktop view, things might get a bit tricky with smaller/tablet/mobile views where you will need to start editing the responsive_default.css, responsive_tablet.css and responsive_mobile.css stylesheets - but hopefully, and on reflection, if you use % for your margin offset instead of px you might be ok.
At smaller views the top-banner div holding your text does not ordinarily display - hidden by a {display:none} code in the above three stylesheets. You will need to remove this from all three css files and add your own styling to suit the different views that smaller/tablet/mobile users will see.

What do you mean by not displaying correctly? Is it the width of the dropdown? If so add this to your stylesheet
.wrapperAttribsOptions .back {width:100px;}

No, it should be added as a percentage like this:
Code:
.wrapperAttribsOptions {width:100%;}
Thanks,

Re: Westminster New
There is a new issue with font-awesome.
Check out them missing social media icons! When inspecting the element, the following error displays:
Quote:
Font from origin 'http://maxcdn.bootstrapcdn.com' has been blocked from loading by Cross-Origin Resource Sharing policy: No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource. Origin 'http://YOURSITE.com' is therefore not allowed access.
Downloading the stylesheets and fonts folder from the origin here and uploading them on your server should fix the issue.
Don't forget to update your html_header.php file with the proper path:
Code:
<link href="/includes/templates/westminster_new/css/font-awesome.css" rel="stylesheet" />

Hi Anne,
I have tested it on a website and it displays fine for all the devices/tablets that the website emulates. I have started a thread though asking people to check it on their devices for me, and the first person who has checked was using an LG phone, and he said that it displays the default Zen Cart template with "congratulations, you have installed....etc"
Not sure what is going on really? :smile: Do any of the files need updating to list new devices/tablets?
Thanks
