A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
I went through the setup of the latest version ZenCart, and had some troubles so I thought I'd come here and see if anyone could help!
When trying to install the following problems were found:
CURL not compiled into PHP - notify server administrator
PHP Session Support is required
admin configure.php is not writeable
store configure.php is not writeable
I was unable to set the permissions for the configure files in /docs and /includes.
I'm really new to all of this, so I'm not sure what information to offer. I'm using GoDaddy as my host and my operating system is Windows. I'm not using any FTP Client aside from what is provided by GoDaddy because I haven't been able to connect for some reason.
The more details the explanation, the more helpful. I'm INCREDIBLY new to all of this and don't know very much. After hours of searching for answers and a day for waiting for help from GoDaddy I'm feeling more clueless than when I started.
Thanks in advance. :)

Oops, I meant /admin/includes, not /docs

Search forums for GoDaddy..their hosting not really
compatible with zencart

Ask GoDaddy to change your operating system to Lunix...
In the Windows OS you cannot change the permission by ftp, rather the host changes them. In lunix, your FTP can change the permissions.
Also note that when your setup, look at your server version in the administration area. If it does not show the DB is located at (localhost) 127.0.0.1, think about moving your site to a different hosting company. Without 127.0.0.1, your backup module may (MAY) not work.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
Honestly? You might be better off to find a Zen Cart friendly host instead of wasting time with hosting that isn't.

Our hosting is compatible with Zen Cart and we offer a Zen Cart installation through our Hosting Connection community as well.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
hello GD support,
I believe that you may want to d a search on these forums and look at the hundreds of posts that state that your service sux for running ZC due to curl by proxy and refusal to open ports and such...
just because you have an installer dosnt mean that your servers are designed to run an ecommerce system

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
For GD--
Merlin is right. I have one store on GD and don't try to back it up. A waste of time since it has PHP 5.0+ and GD says I need to upgrade my PHP. Yea right. - It is upgraded and still won't work. Some modules do not work with a seperate database location. Always - always get a host that supports Zencart and sets your database to localhost 127.0.0.1. All other stores I have work perfectly and the database is on localhost 127.0.0.1 same server. Only way to go.

Thank you for the feedback. Maybe in the past there have been some issues, however, we have taken steps to address and rectify these. If anyone continues to have any issues, please contact [email protected] and we will work towards a resolution.
HairEnigma,
elkbow was on the money. You will need to switch from Windows to Linux. PHP on Windows IIS 6 servers runs as a CGI app and in safe mode. If you have not switched your operating system already you can follow these steps in the following help article.
http://help.godaddy.com/article/1285
Also, you will be able to modify the file permissions to resolve the other 2 errors:
admin configure.php is not writeable
store configure.php is not writeable
Sincerely,

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
My client currently is on a GoDaddy Windows hosted server. When moving a (functional) Zen Cart over (from production linux server to the client's host [godaddy]), it seems to think that it's not installed.
Anyone have any configure.php hints as to why it may "think" that the site hasn't been installed yet?
http://www.mainesafaritv.com/store/
I've imported the db (successfully) and set the variables in configure.php to connect to the new db location
Paths i've set to d:\hosting\******* (*=my acct name), which I got from the server var document_root.
Any ideas?

Are there any article on using the Zen Cart anywhere on Godaddy? I cant find any.

Honestly? The best advice at this time is find a different host. If you search for GD on this forum you will see why.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
I too am having issues with GoDaddy.... I recently purchased a godaddy hosting account to move from my current company where the sql server keeps going down... I've backed up my data per every way I can find on zen cart wiki and forums... and have yet to be able to successfully restore my data. I am on a linux server with godaddy and when I call to get assistance... they say they will not assist me in moving my data... it's my problem. I'm half tempted to stay where I am - sql issues and all... My site is up for now and I am ready to pull the plug on the new godaddy hosting... that was after a week and a half of trying to get a static IP address... UGH!!!!!!!!!!!

Well. Take it from a guy who just started with Godaddy. You should look elsewhere. Lots of small hosts that are super reliable and good but the idea of being on a tiny host kinda scares me. Makes me thing some guy has a server in his living room.
Im going to make a move soon from Godaddy. For some reason with them the box in the Product descriptions where you embed an image etc wont work!

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
Good progress that GDSupport has joined the forum, and it may be the first step in helping ZC users on GD to get setup properly.
Question remains... why did GD wait so long to react to their customer's complaints and concerns?
Perhaps GDSupport can get her company to do an audit on all clients with a ZC install and in the interests of customer service, UPGRADE them all free of charge to a compatible server?

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
Hi,
I've been running my Zen Cart on Go-Daddy for almost a year now. It was more or less painless until now. There are times, when my zen cart data takes forever to load - or doesnt load at all. Regular html code, or other databases load without problems (blog, gallery, etc). Also, conecting directly to the database via Godaddy interface is no problem and queries work fast. I've contacted GoDaddy support a number of times, but they can not pass me to a technical person. Instead they just take down all the info and tell me that i will get a reply from a techy within 24 to 72 hours. In the meantime (like right now) , my e-commerce site could be completely down and they cant do anything about it. Finally , it starts working again and few hours later i get a reply from GoDaddy that they cant replicate this problem and that I should just buy a more expensive service if i want it to be more reliable. Few days later, the site stops working again. This is really frustrating and im looking for a new host. Would love to get any suggestions. Thank you.
PS.
Here's the email i got from godaddy:
----
Support Staff Response Dear ..,
Thank you for contacting Hosting Support.
I was unable to duplicate any slowness on your web site at the current
time. In shared hosting environments, there can be times when the load
spikes and causes a site to load slower than normal, but this is not
something that can be entirely avoided using shared hosting. If you
find that load times are unacceptable during peak times, you may want
to considering using a virtual dedicated or dedicated server in order
to host your web site. I apologize for any inconvenience.
Please contact us if you have any further issues.

Aaron R.

GDSupport,
these are the kinds of posts that are all over this forum,
I have a serious question and you can PM me any answer
DO your support people get a commission on selling upgrades?
I dont ask this to cause an issue but I have seen way to many times that rather than actually try to find a cause the first solution is always to try to sell an upgrade.

Merlinpa - that was always the answer I got when I had load speed issues and errors with them. A solution for Canada Post? Upgrade to virtual dedicated ($400/yr+) or dedicated ($900/year +).
All they need to do is make port 30000 available!
Happy to say I am no longer with goDaddy!

Merlin,
Im pretty sure that that is the case. Every support guy/girl i talked to in the last couple of weeks have been pitching the upgrade. They all say that the speed of my website is "normal" given my current plan. While my zen cart catalog takes over a minute to come up (or doesnt come up at all ) since 9pm last night.. This is absurd.. There is an obvious problem, and they are just telling me to get an upgrade.
GDSupport, please go to my website (greenhatkiteboarding.com) and try to open any zen cart catalog ( Gear menu -> Kites for example) and tell if the speed is "normal".. Im sure im loosing customers right now.. this is not cool. im starting to look for a more dependable host.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
funny.. 5 minutes after i made my last post, my site became usable again. it was almost completely down since last night.. pages not loading at all or taking over 1 minute to load.
now , they are still a bit slow, but at least they load.
i wonder if me posting here had anything to do with it.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
I have also had serious problems with load times, timeouts........ since moving to godaddy around 2 months ago. It was fine at first but a few of weeks back thing started to sloooooowww doooowwwwnnn.
I started on windows hosting and switched to linux, this didn't help.
So I haven't bothered contacting them after switching to the linux setup.
When I spoke to the staff at godaddy they were very nice people to talk to but, that's not what I paid them for!!!!
I had no problems on my previous host with the same zen setup.
I have taken hosting elsewhere and am moving my site there today or tomorrow.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
shane102 -
Look in your Admin> Tools> Server/Version Info - What does it say for server up time?
-
Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
shane102,
You're not alone.
I've got a long-standing client who's been using GoDaddy hosting religiously for years, contrary to my recommendations.
Today his site is PAINFULLY slow. For the last 6+ hours it's been grinding at a halt.
4 hours ago it was showing these load-averages (in ZC admin->Tools->Server Info):
Server Up Time: 13:36:18 up 151 days, 6:35, 0 users, load average: 29.59, 31.36, 33.86
Server Up Time: 13:38:55 up 151 days, 6:38, 0 users, load average: 32.87, 31.98, 33.70
Server Up Time: 13:39:22 up 151 days, 6:38, 0 users, load average: 33.73, 32.22, 33.73
Server Up Time: 13:42:11 up 151 days, 6:41, 0 users, load average: 30.69, 30.58, 32.80
and now it's showing:
Server Up Time: 17:20:24 up 151 days, 10:19, 0 users, load average: 23.52, 21.87, 19.26
Server Up Time: 17:41:37 up 151 days, 10:40, 0 users, load average: 27.73, 29.45, 27.24
It's not getting much better.
I suspect the server's overloaded with way too many customers on it. Of course, GD is unlikely to acknowledge that. Most hosts won't. Typically they'll just kill the apache process and restart it again hoping that'll knock things down a bit. If they have to restart the server, you'll see the server-uptime number get a reset ... and unless they actually DO something to fix whatever caused the overloading in the first place the problem will resurface again later.
Granted, sometimes high load averages are a result of spam or hacking activity on a completely different account ... but everyone using that shared server suffers. Again, unless the hole is plugged, it's just a matter of time before it happens again.
If the spike in activity is a result of having too many accounts on the same server, they need to move accounts to another server ... but ... unless they police that properly, the problem will just happen again when they allow too many on it again.
These issues are common to all shared-hosting services ... but a good host will actively minimize the number of accounts per server, thus minimizing the likelihood of server-speed plummetting. And, a good host will normally be willing to move your account to a less-overloaded server at no charge, instead of immediately jumping to upsell you to an insanely-overpriced plan.
For at least 5 years I've observed the same as merlin has mentioned: GoDaddy "support" is really a sales office whose primary mandate is to sell sell sell. They don't like doing support because that ties them up and prevents them from getting to the next phone call where they might actually make money on a commissioned sale, or at least keep their call-volume quota at an impressive level. Hence the passing-the-buck attitude so often experienced when calling in.

See, i think it's the problem. So far i've been getting a lot of empty promises and the only solution offered was to upgrade to a super expensive plan which im sure i do not need given my relatively low traffic.
I dont need a website that will always be super fast. I just need a website that will always load. And lately, it's been happening a lot less then advertised 99% of the time. While im being told by your staff that it's completely normal based on GoDaddy's "tests". Sure, the site is loading fine now, but it doesnt look like i can trust it to load like that all the time.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
Just got a call from a GoDaddy support person. Nice guy - Said they will monitor the website and try to figure out the problem. It's nice to actually have someone looking into the issue ,but it's unfortunate that the only way to make that happen is when you make a fuss about it on the forums.

:) unfortunately, no check.. i wouldn't mind given the potential sales these downtimes have cost me.
either way, it's a pain in the a&& to move. so, if they get their sh&t together , i guess i'll stay for now.. if these problems start happening again, i'll definitely hit the road.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
Server Up Time: 05:25:52 up 131 days, 15:08, 0 users, load average: 11.27, 9.52, 7.70
I just clicked on an item thats displayed on my home page and the page didnt show, so I refreshed and it took 55 seconds to load (according to fasterfox)and look to another product-62 seconds.
I have also recieved an email from GoDaddy saying that they have looked into my problem and that its coming from a folder that holds most of the images i use on my site. the folder holds around 49 or 50,000 images and a subfolder(that shouldn't be there and will be deleted) which appears to be a copy of its parent.
So GoDaddy say/reccomend that I shouldn't have more than 1024 files in a folder. Is that true? I wasn't aware of that.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
The last host I was with I used almost exactly the same setup (different domain name) and didnt have these problems.
I changed hosts because several of their servers crashed and it took over two weeks to get the problems sorted and even then it wasn't fully fixed:frusty:
-
Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
Seriously? Godaddy support? Two weeks ok on monday we couldn't even access our site. I call godaddy, they realize they are experiencing a problem on thier end. They assure me it will be fix within 24 hours. HA HA, well two weeks later the same thing is still happening periodically. I have called numerous times, and even submitted 2 support tickets. They tell me, the network load seems oddly high but it shouldn't affect anything. I beg to differ. I deal with it every day. Customers are calling in frustrated because the website keeps timing out. Yes, we are switching hosting providers. We have 12 domains with godaddy that is soon to be no more. I personally have had enough. Oh, and the value applications they install for free, they have absolutley no support for them whatsoever, and don't tell me they do, I have called and recieved an anwser verbatim " We don't support any of those applications" but yet they install it for you. It's like calling an auto dealer for support with your vacum cleaner.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
That's it - Im moving hosts... GoDaddy worked fairly well for about a week or two.. Then it started slowing down again.. And now, I get the dreaded MySQL timeout errors. Worst of all, it really pisses me off when there is an obvious problem with the servers, and support tells you that everything is fine.
GD Support, i think you guys should listen to your clients before you loose a lot more of them:
- Stop overloading your servers, or at least offer an upgrade to move to a less crowded server (and the 7 times $ amount upgrade to a virtual host doesnt count)
- open up ports needed for zen cart to function properly
im not shopping around for a better alternative.

Smart Move.. I have one test site on GoDaddy and it takes about 2-3 min to come up using broadband. So I checked the whois.domain-ns and found that the server I use has 3696 other sites residing on that server. Duh !!!
Thank goodness it's not a live store or I'd go bankrupt.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
Anyone using godaddy having problems with html editor?
One of my client's sites is hosted with them, and when trying to update any of the define_pages using html - nothing works. Images won't upload or they get assigned a path drawing from the ADMIN images folder (whatever!) and text sizes and color changes just don't work.
Any ideas on how to fix this - recommended host move already - no go.

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
My partner & I are just beginning to set up our website, not much done yet except that we've decided we want to run our store using Zen Cart after reading up about many different cart options. We purchased a test month of hosting through Go Daddy and we're already having issues just with installation. We're learning as we go and thankfully haven't purchased a full year with GD - at this point, before we begin actually building the site, we really need to know WHICH host we should go with? We want the make the right choice NOW so that we don't have issues with trying to move our site in the future. HELP PLEASE! :D

Re: A few problems - Using GoDaddy as my host
There's a "Certified Hosts" link at the top of this page, where you can find some suggestions. Be sure to do your own research before selecting one.
