I put :

pcre.backtrack_limit = 15000000
pcre.recursion_limit = 15000000

in my php.ini and the installation completed.

Interesting how useless was the discussion with my host (hostgator). Despite showing the error message they insisted they couldn't help me for security reasons. I think I will look for another one.
