Install Zent cart on Amazon cloud servers?

Hi

I'd like to host my zentcart e-commerce app. on amazon cloud servers.

Before doing so, I thought it might be useful to ask about any hosting/installation issues that may be faced by anyone who tried to install zent cart on Amazon cloud servers?

In the early days of AWS there people who wanted to run Zen Cart in S3 spaces, which was never likely to work for a dynamic site. Can't see any inherent reason why you shouldn't be able to run it in a EC2 instance though.

Though, unless you have a pretty resource hungry site, that's probably an expensive way to go.

Of course S3 is not suitable for such dynamic content.

I meant installing on Amazon EC2 which I assumed it should work without major problems. Getting people's feedback/experience would save a lot of time and effort though!

Zen Cart is really very flexible as to what server requirements and thus what AMI would be needed.

However, as general guidance, e-commerce sites are designed to make money, making them a particular target for hackers, so the AMI you choose should reflect a server configuration where you have personal experience of security hardening.

So really the answer to your question should be driven more by your experience and server admin knowledge than by Zen Cart's requirements.

You are absolutely right, pretty much any LAMP installation would do it from Zen-cart point of view.

However, Im not too keen on starting from zero as I'm quite confident that there are already suitable AMI's with necessary management tools, security hardening, configuration done etc. done already. All the stuff one would want in a server.

Is someone familiar with available AMI's and could recommend something. Free would be best, but commercial lisences with reasonable prices are not a problem.

Amazon offers a free usage tier which can be useful to try different cloud resources (e.g., servers, storage, network, etc)

Keep an eye on your account usage as theey start charging your credit card as soon as you free hours/credit is finished

When you create your server you can define a security policy for the server.. http://aws.amazon.com/security/

you my also create a virtual private cloud and direct certain requests to it.. http://aws.amazon.com/vpc/

For security, server security is a process, not a one-off task. There should be a server admin in place who reviews the server on a regular basis, applies new patches and looks out for suspicious behaviour. Yes, getting the intitial config right is important, but equally important is the ongoing maintenance & monitoring. Server admins can be hired but to get a good one, it may not be cost-efficient if you have only 1 server.
