Images loaded at a reasonable size (100k or less) should have no effect on load speed. At least not one that you could catch without a very good stopwatch.

Today's shopper is no longer dealing with a 2kbps dial-up modem. Besides, the images are selected at the server and presented to the browser so one would wonder if separating images into different directories might, in itself, slow down image selection by the server.

There are folks here on the forum with thousands of product images that have not had a slowdown associated with the number of images. Image size and an overloaded server would be a problem first.
    A little help with colors.

I see a slow down on the 'server side' of things when I have too many images in a single directory and I try to browse it within a shell, SCP client or FTP client.

    Thats an OS limitation/shortcoming.

Talking about thousands and thousands of images per directory though.

No issue on the 'client side' when they are browsing the site.

If you will have a ton of products/pix, start with a good directory structure from the start.
