.. there are a TON of little used features that Image Handler has that will help solve your issues).. and this is part of the reason you are not getting a a response.. No one wants to reinvent the wheel.. Image Handler is the wheel..

Image Handler can meet your needs. You think the module is too much for your needs.. You have a not so simple need for which the simple solution is installing Image Handler.. My guess is that no one has provided you the code you are looking for because Image Handler already does what you are asking after, and noone wants to reinvent the wheel (especially for free).. If you don't want to install Image Handler, and no one contributes the code you want, then your other option is to hire someone to write the code you do need..
