Have you set the sitemap directory setting from the configuration?
Admin->Configuration->Sitemap XML->Sitemap Directory

If you have, then check the permissions on those files to make sure they are writable by the server.

Thanks for the reply. I do not have Sitemap XML->Sitemap Directory under config.
