Problem changing file name to .LGE or .MED with IrfanView

When I want to upload a batch of new images to Zen Cart I resize and rename the images .LGE or .MED
I have been using IrfanView to rename a batch of images but for some reason my IrfanView does not work. I always get the following message.
“The drive or network connection that the shortcut “IrfanView Thumbnails.Ink” refers to is unavailable. Make sure the disk is properly inserted or the network resource is available, then try again”.
My IrfanVeiw is an old program copied from my old computer but both my old and new computer is running on Window 7.
Then I tried to download and run a new version of IrfanView but that does not load properly. It is run to be saved on desktop which is the default path on the download. I get the follow message.
“IrfanView Setup. X Invalid destination directory”
Does anyone know where I could be going wrong?
Can anyone suggest another program which is good to change file names?

I have Irfanview installed on several machines XP - 8.1. All installed via admin and did not change any install settings. All working perfectly.
