If yes, this is your database to work with.
They are differently named...and as above have warning messages within the php to say they are different.

I think you should figure out first why you are using two different databases.

For backend login issues of course the database configured in <admin>/includes/configure.php would be the one to look at

The comment at the top of each config.php says one is for ADMIN and one is for STORE.......so obviously ARE different.

    read there..
************ NOTE: This file is VERY similar to, but DIFFERENT from the "admin" version of configure.php. ***********/
/*************** The 2 files should be kept separate and not used to overwrite each other. ***********/

One config.php is for storefront, the other one for the backend.

Both normally they both use one database.

You have your reasons why you do it differently

It was set up from a o purchased template....so I guess they had their reasons.
Anyway...to get back to the question.....presumably just change the ADMIN one.

Weirdly I just ran into the same exact problem, password expired after 90 days and the admin backend refuses to let me set a new password. I use lastpass to generate 40 digit alpha numeric passwords, also containing symbols and the system won't let me set a new password.

SO i've come on here to find that thread I always refer to when using myPhpAdmin to delete my old password and failed login attempts :)
