Google penalising my zencart due to page size too big

Hi Zencart Team

A client has just informed me that their SEO expert state the pages for the Zencart site I built for them is too big for Google to index. Its over 500Kb.

This is because the image files are not resized to thumbnails in zencart but the images just resized in HTML. So on a category page for example with priduct listing youll have large file sizes.

I am about to install a dynamic image resizing feature to deliver small thunbnail size files thus speeding up page loading and allowing Google to index.

But my main question is why Zencart does not have a thumbnail generating tool (or the option to upload an seperate thumbnail) built in. I would have thought the Google and page loading speed issues would be enough.

I know you can FTP additional images to the server, but many of my clients do not know how to make thumbnail images or use FTP so they do not use this feature.

I might be wrong about this, but isn't there a way to designate _LARGE, _MEDIUM, and _SMALL images?

Something like:

computer_LARGE.jpg
computer_MED.jpg
computer_SM.jpg

??

Yeah, but I think this is for the extra images you are uploading isn't it? And many people don't know how to resize images or FTP.

NO this is for all images this way ZC will only pull the small image for the categories and product list index pages and so forth

the medium images are then displayed on product description

and the large image is only displayed when someone says to show larger image

This is an indespensable mod. If we all keep our fingers crossed, maybe it will make it into core some day :)

I have installed Image Handler 2. It is a great mod and will now use it for every Zencart I provide now. Just an extra bit of work. I still think the thumbnail issue is fundamental though and should be a built in feature by default as its soo necessary. Nevertheless, it was not a big job to install IH2.
