This is the definitive FAQ entry. I don't know of anything more illustrative than this.

Am I being stoopid?
Hi
I read the Wiki for this and was looking to add the values to each option - from the archive it suggests a post by grayson to amend
includes/modules/pages/product_info/main_template_vars_attributes.php
well... I can't find that file? has it been superceded... ? or is my install missing it?
Christine
Ok - I was being stoopid - the file has been superceded by attributes.php.
Have to say though it has taken me hours to find this out... guess I should have realised when the Wiki pointed to such an old thread.
Christine
When I run the SQL file to install this mod, I get this error:
1062 Duplicate entry 'STOCK_SHOW_LOW_IN_CART' for key 2
in:
[INSERT INTO zen_configuration (configuration_title, configuration_key, configuration_value, configuration_description, configuration_group_id, sort_order, last_modified, date_added, use_function, set_function) VALUES ('Show available stock level in cart when less than order', 'STOCK_SHOW_LOW_IN_CART', 'false', 'When customer places more items in cart than are available, show the available amount on the shopping cart page:', '9', '6', NULL, now(), NULL, "zen_cfg_select_option(array('true', 'false')," );]
If you were entering information, press the BACK button in your browser and re-check the information you had entered to be sure you left no blank fields.
...not exactly sure what's causing this, or what I can do to fix it. Any help would be appreciated!
@aesthetics
There's nothing to fix. It means that the configuration table entry is already there, so there's no need to run the SQL.

Maybe I'm missing something horribly obvious then...
The Readme file says to use the mod to click on Catalog/Products --> Products With Attributes.
...I don't have a "products with attributes" selection in that dropdown. Just my normal "categories/products" section.
Am I missing something?
Are you sure that it's "Stock by Attributes" that you're using and not one of the earlier versions upon which this was built, as none of the readme files since it's inception have said that. They all say that it's in the Catalog -> Products With Attributes menu.
If you are using this mod specifically, but it doesn'ty show in the Admin > Catalog menu, that means that the files have been put in the wrong place. I'd recommend starting by checking the extra box file as that's the one that causes it to be shown up in the Admin menu system.

Sorry, it is Catalog --> Products With Attributes. It's most definitely Stock By Attributes.
When I uploaded the files, I uploaded the includes and admin files straight to the root directory (unless I mis-read, that's what the readme says to do to install the mod), so I'm not sure how they would have gotten in the wrong place.
Where is the extra box file so I can check it?
Sorry if these questions are way basic/vague. I'm new to this program. I really appreciate the help though!
Okay, sorry, I'm an idiot, hahaha.
When I copied the files into my root directory, I copied them into the root directory for the website, rather than the store. Oops!
Thanks for the help! I think I'm set!
