I just had a look at HoverBox and it won't work, well, out of the box.

As you say yourself, ZenMagick uses an alternative theme/template system. That means, the included template files are of no use.

More specific, the files
* additional_images.php
* tpl_modules_main_product_image.php

would need to get ported.

You could just download ZenMagick and install on top of a vanilla zen-cart install.
