You can use link-alias to do that. The only drawback is that you have to do it manually for each link.

The id in the categories can go away if you want to, assuming you dont have too many categories.
An automate process is planned for future release.

Yes, I am using 3.3.7 and have set up aliases for the category ID's just not all the links for each product.. that will take a while.!
Whilst I have your attention..I have page 1 on google for a number of key words, what will happen to those links ? Do I have to set up a re-direction ? If so, how ?
SSU SHOULD redirect old links to new links properly (otherwise, there is no point in setting it up)
You can try to do some test on your site, visit the old links and see if you are redirected to the correct new ones, if not please report it here.
