Also, this has been mentioned before but:
Certain hosts such as GoDaddy have been known to cache the .htaccess files and only reload those very hour or so.

I believe i did install one set of files in the wrong folder but i removed. I imagine as you say there is something left behind causing this but it's 3am here and i'm tired.
Just a quick question though.
I uploaded the MySQL patches via the admin - Was this correct and just one more quick question. If i re-installed or tried to re-install this package and perhaps used the 2.9 version could this fix the problem ?
I use Inmotion Hosting.
My advice would be to do one thing at a time.
For now, try to resolve the problem why you are unable to go to admin. If your front end is working fine now, and only admin is not working, perhaps you should go to bed now and check back later. Your host can be one of those that cache .htaccess and reload the settings every hour or so.

The strange thing is that i was using around 135 megabytes of disc space on my server and it now shows 191 megabytes after the re-installed backup.
I know i was foolish but it's a live shop and thats why i'm trying to get it up before going to bed.
Very weird since SSU can not take that much space.
Well, another thing you could do is: download the site to your folder, then use WinMerge or similar program to compare the file content and structure of the current site with the latest backup you have.
BTW, Im like a blind man trying to show someone else the direction since I have absolutely no way to know your current file structure etc... I do understand your reason for not wanting ppl to look at those tho, but at the same time keep in mind that I have no way to really know the root cause of the problem.

I typed too soon. Thought i had it back as the login page actually showed up this time.
When i try and login it doesn't load and says something about a redirect.
Interesting thing is it shows two // after the .com part and before the catalog part in the browser bar.
Ok i figured it out. I must have went into the includes/configure and admin/includes/configure file and changed the site part which reads [www.yoursite.com] and made it ]www.yoursite.com/ thats a mistake and i added a / which shouldnt be there.
I fixed it and now i'm finally into the admin section.
