Shipping modules explained?

I'm trying to get a firm grasp of how each shipping module works. Can anyone lead me to a single thread or tutorial that goes over each module, one by one, explaining the situation you'd want it. Some of them are self explanatory but others, not so much.

• Flat Rate - one rate for whole store?
• Free Shipping - self-explanatory
• Per Item - ?
• Per Unit - ?
• Store Pickup - self-explanatory
• Table Rate - ?
• United Parcel Service - do you need UPS account?
• United States Postal Service - do you need USPS account?
• Zone Rates - ?

Flat Rate flat one rate for whole store?
One charge regardless of what is ordered

Free Shipping freeshipper
Free Shipping on Always Free Shipping or 0 weight when 0 weight is defined as Free Shipping and is the ONLY shipping module

Free Shipping Options freeoptions
Free Shipping based on the settings based on Total Order Price, Weight or Item Count and shows IN ADDITION to other shipping modules

Per Item item
A charge based on Item Count where Item Count * the Rate is used

Per Unit perweightunit
A shipping module where the Unit Rate is multiplied by the "Product Weight" where the Product Weight is set to the shipping charge for each Product on a per Product basis ... Maximum Weight should be set to 5000 and Tare Rates to 0:0

Store Pickup storepickup
Customer comes to you for Pickup and no shipping charge is needed

Table Rate table
Set to Price, Weight or Item Count and sets pricing levels

United Parcel Service ups
Does not require an account with UPS and gets Real Time quotes based on total weight

United States Postal Service usps
You must have an account with USPS and email or call to activate for the Production Server

Zone Rates zones
Allows for table rates based on Price, Weight or Item Count for various Zone Combinations

I have a quick question regarding UPS module. I have it set as tare 0:0, I set the product at actual weight as well as 0lbs. The problem is for ground actual cost to ship from the area code entered to the location is about $6, the cost shown on the cart is just under $10. Is there something im doing to cause this large of a discrepancy?

When I go to ups.com and calculate the cost, the cost shows $7 for a 4lb product between two addresses. What is causing a $3 difference?

Argh, ok I figured it out. Change the tax basis from shipping to billing or store and it corrects the issue. I guess sometimes it just takes writing it down to figure it out. =)

Im actually a very private person but I appreciate the help ive gotten here so I tend to post my issues and then figure them out and post to help the next person.
