    Default upgrading from 1.3.8a 1.3.9a

If I back up my database and my template I use for version 1.3.8a to version 1.3.9a do a clean install, and move the 2 files over that inventorysource.com put there to stock my store, should everything be fine by importing my database back? Also I use RapidSSL certificate, would that be affected by a clean install of the new version? I dont mind having to reset my payment and shipping modules and my side boxes.

I also want to install the new version into the same database name if thats possible with a clean install?

Hopefully all will go well with a clean install, seems like just as much work just upgrading and overriding.

You're taking a shortcut that still neglects to actually upgrade all your customized files.

You STILL have to manually merge ALL changes to ALL templates and language files as well as any other files changed or added by any addons you've put on your site.

Skipping the steps won't save you any time in the end.

Following the documented upgrade steps is NOT hard. It just takes a little time and patience. And, once you've done it once, the next time will be that much easier and less scary-looking. Plus, using the suggested tools to do the file comparisons makes the task WAY simpler than it sounds.

This is the hard part. It's almost easier to just scratch the site and start over for me. Because of all the addons in my override files, I have no idea what is new core code, and what I need to keep in tact for the addons. My tpl_header.php for example doesn't contain much of the code that the 1.3.9 file does because of CJ Loader [i think]

That's why you compare against the original file first, so you can identify *your* things, and then replicate those things into the new version of the file.

Indeed. I think my biggest issue right now is the file compare is telling me that 95% of my site files area different than 1.3.8a. When in fact they aren't.

This is gonna be a loooooooong night.. And then I have 4 other sites to upgrade

What are you using to do the comparisons with?

It seems strange that whatever you are using is indicating differences when you say there are none. Either you, or the program you are using is presenting misinformation.

In one of the files in the docs folder is a list of the core files that were changed in 1.3 9. All I did was compare that list with the files I had overridden and then compared the 1.3.9 copy of those files with the 1.3.8 files to see what the differences were. Then, if necessary, I made those changes to my override files.

If I have installed mods which change core files, I keep careful track of those, and apply the same process to them.

I don't install many mods, and try not to install any which modify core files (except a couple of small ones in admin, which are easy to re-install) so after the above, it's just a matter of overwriting all the core files (using the extract function in CPanel's File manager), updating the database, and testing everything. Haven't had a problem yet.
