customers are incorrectly subscribed to newsletters by default

In "configuration -> customer details -> show newsletter checkbox", I have set to "off" (0). I then sign up as a new customer. I go into "admin -> customer -> edit" and see that the customer's newsletter setting is set to "subscribed". And when I go and send a newsletter, the customer receives the newsletter.

This is incorrect, since customer had not checkmarked the subscription box. In fact the customer never seen the newsletter subscription box since I had set to "off".

Is this a bug?

Re: customers are incorrectly subscribed to newsletters by default

I don't understand why you're sending newsletters if you've got the setting disabled so customers cannot even opt to receive newsletters.

Nevertheless, if you want to default it to off, change the following line in /includes/modules/create_account.php (near line 28 or so in v1.3.8), as shown:```
$newsletter = (ACCOUNT_NEWSLETTER_STATUS == '1' || ACCOUNT_NEWSLETTER_STATUS == '0' ? false : true);
