Selling a website designed with Zencart

Hi all

can someone give me a definitive answer as to whether a website that has been put together using Zencart, and the buyer has been told that it was put together using Zencart, can be sold. The buyer wants to back out of a sale and is saying public domain software cannot be sold.

Thanks

I see no reason you wouldn't be able to sell the site; as long as the website is receiving valuble traffic, and you are running a version of Zen Cart that has been modified by you (or you have paid someone to modify it)... if you are running the stock template, then the value of your site would be limited.

You can't sell Zen Cart, but you should be able sell your customers and business even if it uses Zen Cart.

Maybe one of the moderators can step in and give a better answer.

Not 100% sure what you mean but ..

If you mean that you have built your client an online store using zen then you can charge for this as you are charging for your design/ development (if not then I'm out of business!).
What you can't charge for is the (default) software as you don't own it.

Sounds to me like your client might be trying to back out of a contract.

Re: Selling a website designed with Zencart

You have sold your skill, expertise and time. You have sold your knowledge of how to do something your customer was unable to do themselves. The contract was for your expertise, not the software.

If they want just the software, then zip up a standard copy of ZC and send it to them.

Make a backup of the site, then remove it from the server. Put it back when they pay you.

Re: Selling a website designed with Zencart

Is this link A Zencart store?
http://stores.saginwholesale.com/StoreFront.bok ? I am asking because a customer once interested in zencart claims the above site was created for him by a webdeveloper from scratch. I insist it is zencart or an e-cart of some sort. and if it is a zencart, where is the Powered by Zencart credit that is supposed to be at the footer?

Yeah, you can certainly sell it. You are not selling the software, you are selling the website, which is a totally different thing. If the buyer cant see the difference, I suggest you go find another one. Dont argue with those.

I no longer provide installation support on forum for all my modules. However, if there are real bugs with the modules please feel free to contact me

Re: Selling a website designed with Zencart

Moderator's note: the 2 threads have been merged.

The answer to your question is YES you can use Zen Cart in a site that is then transferred to another person - you are not seeling the software, you are seeling the design and whatever else you did to it.

Also note - Zen Cart is released under the GNU/GPL license, not public domain. They are different.

Please do not PM for support issues: a private solution doesn't benefit the community.

Be careful with unsolicited advice via email or PM - Make sure the person you are talking to is a reliable source.

Would you be willing to explain the difference? (not that I need to know... I just want to know... :smartalec: LOL )

It is the difference between something being under copyright and not being under copyright. Zen Cart is copyrighted and made available for use and distribution under the GNU General Public Licence (GPL). If something is in the public domain it is not copyrighted and you can do whatever you want with it without licence restrictions.

Regards,
Christian.
