the book (e-start your webstore) and 1.3.8

I own the book 'e-Start your webstore... ' by Goh Koon Hoek. In the book he works with Zen Cart 1.3.7.1.

  1. I am a newbie and I want to start my first store. Does anyone know whether the information in this book is fully applicable to version 1.3.8?
  2. What would you advise me to do. Set up a store in 1.3.7.1 or set up a store in 1.3.8? Or first go through the book wit version 1.3.7.1 and then make an upgrade later to 1.3.8?

Please take in consideration that I need the step by step approach guidance from the book.

Thanks in advance,

If you ordered the print version of the book, there are updates available as a free download that address some of the changes with version 1.3.8

You'll be glad you have the book!

Best wishes for your new site!

Hi Merlinpa and Tina,

Thank you both very much for your advise and support.

Okay, I will go ahead with 1.3.8!

Which version of XAMMP do you recommend in combination with Zen Cart 1.3.8? In the book the author is using 1.4.16 but I have installed 1.5.5. instead. I haven't started yet, so I can still change. Do you recommend another version?

Tina, indeed I have the printed version. Do you know where I can find the free download updates of the book? Unfortunately I can't find them...

Re: the book (e-start your webstore) and 1.3.8

I found that I couldn't install v1.3.8a in my XAMPP 1.5.1 server. When I replaced it with the latest v1.6.7, ZC 1.3.8a installed without a hitch. (Of course, it might also have been related to my very old computer in combination with the old XAMPP version.)

Hello gjh42,

On the Dutch forum they suggest XAMMP 1.5.5 and therefore I have installed it on my Windows XP Professional system yesterday and it works well. However, I haven't installed Zen Cart 1.3.8a yet.

Which operating system do you use on your 'old' computer?

Re: the book (e-start your webstore) and 1.3.8

I'm running on Windows 2000 Professional, which is generally working fine for me. My computer is built with a file system that doesn't have the ability to set permissions for individual files, only for levels of users. Maybe that had something to do with it, who knows?

Re: the book (e-start your webstore) and 1.3.8

XAMPP 1.4.16 works with Zen Cart versions 1.3.6 up to 1.3.8a.

If you are installing Zen Cart 1.3.8a, you may want to consider using the latest XAMPP version 1.6.8 which runs PHP 5.2.6, Apache 2.2.29 and MySQL 5.0.67.

Do note that the newer versions of XAMPP may require you to manually change a Mercury mail port to prevent conflict with Apache's port 80 as stated here.

If you are on a Windows Vista machine, take note of the issues here when updating your hosts file.

Re: the book (e-start your webstore) and 1.3.8

Then I think it indeed has something to do with your operating system / pc, Glenn.

Thank you too, Goh Koon Hoek, for the information regarding XAMMP 1.6.8 and port 80. As I installed XAMMP 1.5.5. a few days ago I think I will set my system back and install the newest version.

B.T.W.: I am very glad that I bought the hard copy of your book. Installing XAMMP went very smoothly with your instrutions at hand!
