Custom Product Filters - Products Gender

Hi,

I would like to create a custom filter for each of the products depending upon the gender they belong to, such as male, female.

I saw the default filter files but they got very confusing.

All i would like to do is on each of my category/subcategory pages i would like to display links such as Male & Female. So that when one clicks on Male, all products in that category/sub-category belonging to the Male gender will get listed.

Any idea on how to proceed on this.
