Preventing Default Attribute from Being Selected when adding to cart

I have a default attribute that says "select sizes and width". Is there a way to prevent this from being added to the cart? (Say if someone forgot to select what shoe size they wanted)

Add one more value to this name and make it something like

"please choose" or another your prefer. Add it to the product list for this attribute and make it "Display Only" and default
