Thanks, Ajeh,
But I don't think this will work for us. What my clients really want to do is have everything working the way it is, with weight based shipping or flat or table ship on most items, and then also offer free shipping on only certain products, and then also only offer large/heavy shipping on certain items that don't fit a normal UPS model.
I have marched this around my head and with some other developers and the different retail store owners. It seems that using the zones or product types would be the best way to investigate something like that. If there were a way to assign certain shipping modules to a product type and then assign some products to that type, that would take care of it.
Thanks. I will let people know if I ever develop a function for this.
Ajeh:
The Per Unit perweightunit is designed to be able to put in the specific shipping cost on a per product basis ...
It is not designed to run with the other shipping modules that require true weight calculations, such as USPS or UPS ...
It can, however, run with Item count or Price modules ...
Per Unit perweightunit can also be cloned to allow for a different Unit Rate for other zones such as, the US being based on a Unit Rate of 1.00 and then Canada being based on 1.25 and the Rest of the World being based on a unit rate of 1.75 ...
You would want to set the Maximum Weight to 5000, vs the default of 50.00 and set the Tare Weights to 0:0 ...
If you have Products that ship for Free, then set the Product Weight to 0.00 or as Always Free Shipping and set 0 weight means Free shipping ... then install the Free Shipping freeshipper shipping module for when only Free Shipping Products are in the Order ...
