Free Gifts-Dangling Carrot support

Hi. First off - Thanks so much to the developer of this contribution. Its awesome that people take the time to create these mods and then help with problems.

I've been having the same page half loading problem on my website. I had no idea why and after searching the forums came up with the plan to reload the function_categories.php file. When i did this my website loaded properly again. It was only after doing this that i realised that this contribution edited this file and so i uploaded the contribution version and again the page half loaded. So then i used winmerge to merge the original file with the contribution version and now my site works.

That sounds all good doesn't it - UNTIL 8) ... i tried actually using this mod and discovered that my Special Gifts sidebox is empty and even when i reach the threshold the gift doesn't appear in the cart.

In case its all connected, i also get the following error:
PHP Warning: Missing argument 2 for display_price() in .../includes/classes/currencies.php on line 99

But i can't figure out what this is connected to.

I hope this helps narrow down the problem and will post back if i get any further myself.

Hey. When i delete items from the cart making the total LESS than the amount required for the free gift, the free gift remains in the cart. This happens even when i delete everything else from the cart. As no one else has reported this problem i'm sure i've mucked something up! Does anyone know what i have done wrong?

I want to have a gift that has attributes that are selectable, such as a "free movie" that has a drop down list attribute.

When you select the gift you want, it immediately transfers you to the product info page allowing you to select the attributes (in this case, the movie you want) but then you can't add it to cart since its a gift.

Also, I am also having the problems with pages not loading, specifically categories dont load the centre and right columns, and currently with product info it refuses to load the right column.

I too have the problem that when I use the files provided with the mod half my page wont load (right side boxes and footer).

You mention you merged the old/new functions file which sorted the blank page problem but the actual mod still didn't work correctly.

Did you manage to sort out the problem?

Hi Butchx5. I'm really sorry i can't help. I couldn't figure out what to do and lost days trying so in the end i started all over again with a fresh install and didn't use this mod. I now don't have these problems so i guess there's a connection to this mod and the problems - I guess some other incompatible mod that i installed but i just did everything too quickly the first time to be able to figure out what it was. good luck. i hope you figure it out cause this would have been a great addition.

This mod definitely works, as it did on my site. Until I moved to a PHP5 server and encountered some checkout bugs with a customer account. But apart from that it works fine. Just needs a code update.

From reading this forum it does seem like this mod works easily for most people which is why i came to the conclusion that it must have been incompatible with one of the other mods i installed. the best recommendation i can make if you still want this mod is to do a fresh install, back up the database and then add this mod first before any others. Then see if it works for you (which it should from others experience). Instead, i'm going to offer free gifts in the text of my website and then just know to send them out. Should achieve roughly the same result from the customers' point of view although won't appear in the admin side...

I have installed this module in stores for testing. No other modules installed before. And what happens is... the page disappears.

The developer has nothing to say about this. This is :(

This is the official thread for support on the Zen Cart port of Dangling Carrot.
In the early release, many core files are modified. This port was quite complex and we are hoping to modify the code to reduce the number of core files that are overwritten.

While we did a lot of testing on the mod prior to release, there may be things we missed, so if you experience any problems with the mod, please post them here.

What I am looking for its almost like this way but I don't won't them to choose a free gift I just want to through in a certain gift when they check out. Can someone help me on this?

I'm using zencart version 1.3.8a and in the admin the items that I added as free gifts did not appear under the Free Gifts heading. I removed this sql bit "pd.language_id = '".$languages_id."'
AND" from lines 107-108 in admin/gift_add.php and it worked. It was coming up with pd.language_id = '' and no results were being returned.

is there a way to have the customer enter a coupon code to get the free product? for example, a one time use coupon adds the free product to the cart?

OK, I installed the dangling carrot mod and my store went away. The header loaded and that's all, just a blank page otherwise.

After I ran the SQL and installed the files I was able to create the free gift (created a Free Gift category, disabled it, manually added a new product and marked it as a carrot).

Then in Catalog / Free Gift I was able to assign the new product to an order value. The only problem was that my frontend was dead.

I restored the original file and the store was back. I was able to checkout and the free gift worked fine, all the way through the checkout process.

I then tried to make another gift for the next price level. The product did not appear as an option in Catalog / Free Gift. It seems that the mod uses functions_categories.php to manage the carrot products. I'm sure that file is the prob: functions_categories.php in this mod is MUCH shorter than the original (18 KB vs 23 KB???). It's as though the end of the file was deleted.

I didn't want to WinMerge the two. I read in this thread that that caused other problems for some users.

So here's my fix:
You can either have a frontend that works, or be able to configure carrot products in the admin. Not both. By swapping the files I can administer carrots and also have a functioning store.

I have 2 backups of functions_categories.php in includes / functions: functions_categories_php.carrot (from the module) and functions_categories_php.nocarrot (the template original).

When I need to make a new carrot product I turn on the .carrot file, create and assign the product, then re-activate the .nocarrot file.

I know, this is a completely hideous fix :no: , but at least this way Dangling Carrot has it's code when I need to make a new carrot, and my store has its code the other 99.99% of the time. And how often will I be making a new carrot anyway? It only breaks the cart for a couple minutes and then my site is back up with its new carrot in place.

Hope this is helpful to someone! I've done this on 2 zen sites and so far all is well. Carrots work, my store works.

Two issues: the product display now bleeds into the right column instead of wrapping and staying in the center column, and the sidebox doesn't show the gifts, it only has the text "Free Gift".

Ok guys, so it seems there are a number of issues in Dangling Carrot. I've taken a quick look and it seems there are a number of lines of code missing in several files. I do have three different versions of DC on my computer, each with different issues. I'll try and merge the three together and get a working version as quickly as possible for you. The biggest problem is obviously loss of the front end of the shop.
