how do I remove the** 'sub-categories**' and the** 'whatsNew'** from showing on my main page center column?

Try looking at:

admin...configuration...index listing

Right now I have all **values **in the index listing as '0' and it only removed the new product that appeared on my main page.

the subcategories continue to appear on the main page, how can I remove those?
