larger image display question

right now if a customer clicks an item's category page thumbnail it takes them to the product info page. From there they can click the product thumbnail to see a larger image in a pop up window.

I'd like to set it up so that the customer can see the larger image in the pop up by clicking on the Category page thumbnail instead (and just using the text link under that thumbnail to get to the product info page).

Anyone know how to do this?

maybe I wasn't clear. Let me try again.

What I want is: when the customer clicks the thumbnail on the main category page a popup will appear with the larger image in it. Right now this can only be done from the product info page.

Can any one give me any suggestions on how to do this?
