help: subcategories in center column, main page

how do I remove the 'sub-categories' grid that appears on my main page center column?

What values do you have for the following Admin settings in the Configuration > Layout Settings menu?

1. Categories - Always Show on Main Page
2. Main Page - Opens with Category

I thought I had fixed it but the problem continues.

What I want to do is to **remove **the grid that appears on my homepage center column. When I turned to FALSE the Show Sub-Categories on Main Page while navigating through Categories, it removes the grid in the home page center column BUT it also removes the listing that appears on the centercolumn when clicking on a subcategory and I don't want that.

I am creating a perfume shop so what I want is that when someone clicks on the left box subcategory 'women', it will take them to the brand listing. I don't want the subcategories to appear on the homepage center column. How do I remove them?
