Maxium Shipping Weight

Hi,
I added my question to a similar thread yesterday but nobody replied, so I'm starting a new thread with it:

I would like to block package weights of more than 4.41lb/2kg. I've put a comment in under Shipping Costs to advise customers that they should contact me if the total weight of their products exceeds this, so that I can advise the most economical way of sending the order.
The reason for this is that I might split the order into more than one package or I might send the order by courier. Using normal post rates, I'm looking at parcel weights with the Irish postal services which are a lot more expensive.
Instead of "blocking" larger weights, Zen Cart just creates new shipping costs. Is it assuming I want to send the order in 2 packages?
How can I set it up so Zen Cart won't accept orders heavier than 2kg or prompts customers to contact me?

Thanks for any help with this:smile:

What shipping module(s) are you currently using?

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

Sorry, should've put that in, I'm using Zone Rates only and I'm a newbie to all this, so I'm struggling with a lot of things.
Shipping costs for my different zones come up correctly, but I'd like the cart to accept my top limit/maximum shipping weight for the reasons I've given above.

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

I have a similar situation, but with additional problems.

My client needs to send items that would be very heavy, even to the point their entire order would need to be shipped via carrier (on a ship) internationally.

So, my question is how do I set up shipping (after a certain weight) to "call for pricing"

Thanks,

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

You could add a condition on your shipping methods that disable them based on the weight and if no weight then you cannot get past the checkout_shipping page ... and with a bit of customizing you could have it display a message to call rather than an error ...

Would that work for you?

I am assuming you have the exact weight limitation for ALL of your Zones ...

Is that correct?

Many thanks for you reply and sorry I didn't thank you earlier. There were things going on in my life for the last couple of weeks that took priority and didn't leave me any time for my website.
Yes, I do have the exact weight limitations for all my zones. It's 2kg, well, the US pound equivalent to that, as parcels over 2kg are a lot more expensive to send.
I understand what you're suggesting but have no idea how to do this. I'm a newbie to website building and Zen Cart and find a lot of the applications in Zen Cart quite difficult to deal with.

Hi Ajeh

I would like the implement the above, but, looks like will involve custom development - is this the case? Or, could you advise and I do?

I am using latest zen cart and zone rates, per item, but want to stop EU customers from being able to order over 25 items. the site is www.logo-golfballs.co.uk. If the order over 25 a message is flagged asking to contact to arrange shipping.

all help greatly appreciated.

Matt

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

You would need to customize the shipping module to test for the both the number of items in the cart as well as for the shipping address ...

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

I'm looking for the same thing here...

I have a customer that sends some HEAVY stuff. He ships normal (under 150 pounds) via UPS. Anything over 150, though, still shows a shipping cost, even though UPS doesn't do that (ok, they do, but it's freight, and "call for quote").

So, how would we customize the shipping module to kick any PRODUCT over 150 pounds, but to allow seperate packing (multiple packages) for an ORDER of over 150 pounds?

I couldn't find anything even remotely close to this stuff in the shipping module. The only thing we have enabled is "store pickup".

With a PRODUCT over 150 pounds, they'd have to call for shipping information, and have that amount added to the order (not sure how to do that, either).

Any help? Please?

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

Would setting the Products too heavy to ship as Call for Price work?

This would allow the customer to see the product but not buy it online ...

Or, set the products_weight to 0 and this would allow the regular Products to get UPS shipping but add in that these products would need additional charges for shipping by phone ...

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

Thanks for the quick response. I'm checking with the client about the "Call for Pricing" option. MIGHT end up doing that. What's nice about that is that we can still enter a price and change the image from "Call for Price" to "Call for Shipping". I'm hoping he goes that route (I'll know after the weekend).

Otherwise, we'll have to figure out what to do. I think FedEx would be able to handle the freight option, but as far as I can tell, there is no longer a FedEx module available.

I'll post back when I find out which way he decides to go. Either way, though, I'd be interested in finding out about a FedEx shipping solution if there is one.

You are smarter than the average bear ... I didn't have to spell out for you just switch the Image/Text for the Call for Price to Call for Shipping ...

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

Well, good news & bad news...

Good news first: Customer DID opt for the "Call for Price" option, with a custom image to read "Call for Shipping".

Bad news is that he's using an inventory package that automatically connects with Zen Cart to keep his inventory up-to-date. Because of this, it is constantly overwriting what we already have in Zen Cart... This is causing 2 problems.

  1. Items we listed as "Call for Price" no longer have "call for price" flagged after the inventory update. There are thousands of products this guy is going to list, so going back in every time to manually change is not an option. Any way to flag a product of a certain weight to automatically get changed to "call for price"???

  2. Products with 0 stock are not showing up active on the site after the transfer, even though I have my "Stock/Products Status in Catalog when out of stock should be set to" already set to 1 (leave product status on).

This site REALLY needs to get up, and these 2 issues are the only delay, but are both vital to his business.

Any help? Suggestions?

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

Using the Tools ... Install SQL Patches ...

To enable all products to show, regardless of quantity, you can run the command:

UPDATE products SET products_status = 1;

If you only want to enable the Products with 0 quantity:

UPDATE products SET products_status = 1 WHERE products_quantity = 0;

To set the Call for Price on based on weight of 150 or more pounds:

UPDATE products SET product_is_call = 1 WHERE products_weight >= 150;

That sounds great. Where would I enter that info? In a Zen Cart file?

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

Oops... didn't see the Tool part you put on there.

Tried them out and....

YOU ROCK!!!!

Seems to work. I'm going to run an update from the inventory software to see what happens, but I'm optimistic!

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

Oy... not so great. Worked until I updated the inventory, then the SQL patches were removed. :yuck:

Are those commands removed from Zen Cart after they're run once? They didn't stay in Zen Cart.

Will there be any difference if I put those commands in a file & attach the file?

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

I created a .txt file with the commands in it, and uploaded. Both commands processed, same as they did before.

When I ran the inventory update, the items with weights>=150 lbs STAYED set (whoo-hoo), but the items with a quantity of 0 did NOT (they were disabled again). :shocking:

I also added another product over 150 pounds into the inventory (automatically uploaded into zen cart) to see what would happen.

It did NOT set it to "call for price" automatically. I had to run the commands again to flag it.

Any ideas?

Re: Maxium Shipping Weight

I gave you the commands to run after the import ...

You would have to build them into your import code to manage this automatically ...
